It's Christmas week, and amidst the joy and chaos this season brings, it is important to pause and reflect on why we celebrate. That is precisely what we will do today. In our Bible study today, let's take time to answer the most important question anyone can ever answer: Who is Jesus?
What is your favorite Christmas tradition? Why?
1. Read Colossians 1:15-20. What do we learn about Jesus in this passage of Scripture? (There are multiple answers to this question!)
Colossians 1:15-20
Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, 16 for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see— such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through him and for him. 17 He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together. 18 Christ is also the head of the church, which is his body. He is the beginning, supreme over all who rise from the dead. So he is first in everything. 19 For God in all his fullness was pleased to live in Christ, 20 and through him God reconciled everything to himself. He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ’s blood on the cross.
2. What do we learn about Jesus’ involvement in creation in Colossians 1:15-20?
3. How does Christ “hold all creation together,” according to Colossians 1:15-20?
4. In one word, describe what this passage of Scripture teaches about Jesus.
1. What stood out to you about Jesus in our Scripture reading today?
2. How has Jesus specifically impacted your own life?
3. Because Jesus is supreme over everything, how should we respond to Him?
This week is the perfect time to reach out to someone who needs the hope of Christ. Who are you currently praying for who is far from Christ? Commit to inviting them to join you for one of our Christmas Eve services this week. As a group, pray for these people by name and that they would come to know Christ this Christmas season.
This Christmas season is all about Jesus. Let’s take a few moments to keep diving deeper into what Scripture teaches us about Jesus. As we reflect more on Scripture and what it teaches about Jesus, we will be reminded just what an amazing Savior He is!
It has been said that in most religions, their humanity has to work to get to their false god. In Christianity, the one true God came to us through Jesus Christ, who left heaven to come to earth, live among people, and rescue us from sin. What a remarkable Savior that we have!
1. Read John 1:14. “The Word” John writes about in this passage of Scripture is Jesus.
John 1:14
So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.
2. What truths does John teach about Jesus in this passage of Scripture?
3. In your own words, what does it mean that Jesus “made His home among us?”
4. Why was it necessary for Jesus to come to earth and “make His home among us,” being fully God and fully man?
Scripture reveals that even as Jesus faced temptations while He lived on earth, He never sinned. He lived a perfect, sinless life on earth, never giving in to sin despite the temptations He faced. Because of His sinless life, when he died on the cross for the sins of the world, He conquered sin once and for all.
1. Read 2nd Corinthians 5:18-21.
2nd Corinthians 5:18-21
And all of this is a gift from God, who brought us back to himself through Christ. And God has given us this task of reconciling people to him. 19 For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation. 20 So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, “Come back to God!” 21 For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.
2. How did Jesus overcome sin, according to this passage of Scripture?
3. How has Jesus’ conquering of sin impacted us and our relationships with God if we have placed our faith in Him?
4. How are we to respond to the news that Jesus conquered sin, according to this passage of Scripture?
One of the gravest consequences of sin is death. As soon as sin came into the world, death came into the world, too. Jesus came into the world to live a perfect life, die an excruciating death on a cross, and rise from the dead, conquering death. Jesus’ resurrection changed everything. That is why Paul wrote in 1st Corinthians 15:54-55, “Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”
1. Read 1st Corinthians 15:51-58.
1st Corinthians 15:51-58
But let me reveal to you a wonderful secret. We will not all die, but we will all be transformed! 52 It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown. For when the trumpet sounds, those who have died will be raised to live forever. And we who are living will also be transformed. 53 For our dying bodies must be transformed into bodies that will never die; our mortal bodies must be transformed into immortal bodies. 54 Then, when our dying bodies have been transformed into bodies that will never die, this Scripture will be fulfilled: “Death is swallowed up in victory. 55 O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” 56 For sin is the sting that results in death, and the law gives sin its power. 57 But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ. 58 So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.
2. How did Jesus give us victory over death?
3. According to this passage of Scripture, what is the result of Jesus overcoming death?
4. How does Paul call us to live in light of the truth that Jesus conquered death in this passage of Scripture?
As we remember what a wonderful Savior we have who came to earth, died on the cross, and rose from the grave, conquering sin and death, now is a great time to review the Bridge Diagram. Watch the Bridge Diagram video together as a group, which can be found here. Then, break into groups of two or three and practice sharing it so that you will be ready to share the hope of Christ when you have the opportunity.
