Big God, Little Me : Week 2

BIG IDEA

This weekend, during our series "Big God, Little Me," we talked about God's omnipotence. Omnipotent means all-powerful. Indeed, God is all-powerful. In fact, our human minds cannot even fully comprehend the scope of God's power because nothing can compare to the power of our God. In our study today, we will dive into Scripture to examine what it teaches about God's power and be encouraged that our all-powerful God is at work in our own lives.

BREAK THE ICE

How have you seen God’s power on display in the world? This could be through nature, your own life, someone else’s life, or something else.

SMALL GROUP QUESTIONS

Bible Study

1. Read Isaiah 46:5-10. How does God's power compare to the things that people idolize and put in the place of God in their lives, according to this passage of Scripture?

Isaiah 46:5-10

“To whom will you compare me? Who is my equal? 6 Some people pour out their silver and gold and hire a craftsman to make a god from it. Then they bow down and worship it! 7 They carry it around on their shoulders, and when they set it down, it stays there. It can’t even move! And when someone prays to it, there is no answer. It can’t rescue anyone from trouble. 8 “Do not forget this! Keep it in mind! Remember this, you guilty ones. 9 Remember the things I have done in the past. For I alone am God! I am God, and there is none like me. 10 Only I can tell you the future before it even happens. Everything I plan will come to pass, for I do whatever I wish.

2. Read Job 26:7-14. Why can’t we fully understand or comprehend the extent of God’s power according to this passage of Scripture?

Job 26:7-14

God stretches the northern sky over empty space and hangs the earth on nothing. 8 He wraps the rain in his thick clouds, and the clouds don’t burst with the weight. 9 He covers the face of the moon, shrouding it with his clouds. 10 He created the horizon when he separated the waters; he set the boundary between day and night. 11 The foundations of heaven tremble; they shudder at his rebuke. 12 By his power the sea grew calm. By his skill he crushed the great sea monster. 13 His Spirit made the heavens beautiful, and his power pierced the gliding serpent. 14 These are just the beginning of all that he does, merely a whisper of his power. Who, then, can comprehend the thunder of his power?

3. Read Isaiah 40:28-31. What does this passage of Scripture reveal about God’s power to work in the lives of His people?

Isaiah 40:28-31

Have you never heard? Have you never understood? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth. He never grows weak or weary. No one can measure the depths of his understanding. 29 He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless. 30 Even youths will become weak and tired, and young men will fall in exhaustion. But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.

4. Read John 15:5. What does this passage of Scripture teach us about our own power versus the power of God?

John 15:5

Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.

Application

1. What is an area of your life where you are asking God to work and display His power?

2. How do you currently see God’s power at work in your own life, whether in big or small ways? How does it give you confidence in the areas of your life where you need God to work?

3. How can we “tap in” to the power of God, according to John 15:5?

MOVING FORWARD

Jesus calls us to remain in Him, and He will work and produce fruit in our lives. After all, we can do nothing apart from Him. What is one change you can implement in your life to remain in Him? It could be focusing on prayer, Scripture reading, listening to worship music that sets your heart and mind on Him, memorizing Scripture, or something else. Whatever you decide, share it with your group and commit to implementing that change starting this week.

GOING DEEPER

In the Old Testament, God's people saw evidence of God's power all around them. When Jesus, the Son of God and the second person of the Trinity, came to earth, He physically demonstrated God's power through His words and miracles. People witnessed His power first-hand right in front of them. Today, let's examine three different ways Jesus demonstrated His power during His ministry on earth, allowing us to gain a deeper understanding of God's power.

Power Over Creation:

During His earthly ministry, Jesus proved His power over creation. His power to calm storms, multiply fish and bread, and more left no doubt that He was no ordinary human. He was God. Scripture teaches that Jesus was present at creation and involved in creating the world, so of course, He had power over creation while He was here on earth.

1. Read Matthew 8:23-27.

Matthew 8:23-27

23 Then Jesus got into the boat and started across the lake with his disciples. 24 Suddenly, a fierce storm struck the lake, with waves breaking into the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” 26 Jesus responded, “Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!” Then he got up and rebuked the wind and waves, and suddenly there was a great calm. 27 The disciples were amazed. “Who is this man?” they asked. “Even the winds and waves obey him!”

2. What did Jesus’ disciples learn about Jesus’ power in this passage of Scripture?

3. How did they respond to Jesus’ miracle in this passage of Scripture, and what did their response reveal about what they were realizing about Jesus?

4. How have you seen God’s power displayed through His creation?

Power Over Sickness:

Part of Jesus’ ministry on earth consisted of healing the sick. In fact, as word spread of Jesus' power to heal, crowds of people gathered to be healed by Him. His healing ministry on earth reveals God's healing power, encompassing not only physical healing but also spiritual healing.

1. Read Luke 4:38-40.

Luke 4:38-40

After leaving the synagogue that day, Jesus went to Simon’s home, where he found Simon’s mother-in-law very sick with a high fever. “Please heal her,” everyone begged. 39 Standing at her bedside, he rebuked the fever, and it left her. And she got up at once and prepared a meal for them. 40 As the sun went down that evening, people throughout the village brought sick family members to Jesus. No matter what their diseases were, the touch of his hand healed everyone.

2. What stands out to you about Jesus’ healing power in this passage of Scripture?

3. What was the response of people to Jesus’ healing power?

4. How have you seen God’s healing power displayed in your own life?

Power Over Death:

One of the last miracles of Jesus was arguably the most incredible. You see, until this point, Jesus had demonstrated His power over nature, sickness, and disease, among other things. Now, it was time to reveal that He not only has power over these things, but He also has power over death.

1. Read John 11:17-44. This passage of Scripture is longer, so take a few moments to read it individually and then come back together to discuss it.

John 11:17-44

17 When Jesus arrived at Bethany, he was told that Lazarus had already been in his grave for four days. 18 Bethany was only a few miles down the road from Jerusalem, 19 and many of the people had come to console Martha and Mary in their loss. 20 When Martha got word that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him. But Mary stayed in the house. 21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask.” 23 Jesus told her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24 “Yes,” Martha said, “he will rise when everyone else rises, at the last day.” 25 Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. 26 Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this, Martha?” 27 “Yes, Lord,” she told him. “I have always believed you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who has come into the world from God.” 28 Then she returned to Mary. She called Mary aside from the mourners and told her, “The Teacher is here and wants to see you.” 29 So Mary immediately went to him. 30 Jesus had stayed outside the village, at the place where Martha met him. 31 When the people who were at the house consoling Mary saw her leave so hastily, they assumed she was going to Lazarus’s grave to weep. So they followed her there. 32 When Mary arrived and saw Jesus, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.” 33 When Jesus saw her weeping and saw the other people wailing with her, a deep anger welled up within him, and he was deeply troubled. 34 “Where have you put him?” he asked them. They told him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Then Jesus wept. 36 The people who were standing nearby said, “See how much he loved him!” 37 But some said, “This man healed a blind man. Couldn’t he have kept Lazarus from dying?” 38 Jesus was still angry as he arrived at the tomb, a cave with a stone rolled across its entrance. 39 “Roll the stone aside,” Jesus told them. But Martha, the dead man’s sister, protested, “Lord, he has been dead for four days. The smell will be terrible.” 40 Jesus responded, “Didn’t I tell you that you would see God’s glory if you believe?” 41 So they rolled the stone aside. Then Jesus looked up to heaven and said, “Father, thank you for hearing me. 42 You always hear me, but I said it out loud for the sake of all these people standing here, so that they will believe you sent me.” 43 Then Jesus shouted, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 And the dead man came out, his hands and feet bound in graveclothes, his face wrapped in a headcloth. Jesus told them, “Unwrap him and let him go!”

2. What did Jesus reveal about Himself in this passage of Scripture?

3. What did this miracle of Jesus prove to anyone who watched this miracle and heard about this miracle?

4. How does Jesus’ power over death give you hope and confidence today?

If God has power over even death, there is nothing that He does not have power over. This ought to give us confidence that He is in control of any situation. As a group, commit to memorizing John 11:25-26. Spend a few minutes working on memorizing it now. After about 5 minutes, your group leader will select a few people who volunteer to recite the verses for your group. Keep working on memorizing these verses and bring them to mind often, reflecting on the never-ending power of God.
