Where Heaven Meets Earth: Week 1

BIG IDEA

This week, we started a brand new series called Where Heaven and Earth Meet. In this series, we are looking at what exactly we human beings are searching for. You see, whether we realize it or not, we are all searching for something to worship or center our lives around. All of the things that we search for and center our lives around here on this Earth will ultimately leave us empty because they are not lasting. Only God will truly satisfy us and meet the longings of our hearts.

MOVING FORWARD

There are so many reasons why only God is worthy of our worship. One of those reasons is that He has proven Himself faithful time and time again throughout your life. His record of past faithfulness should lead us to worship. Group leaders, set a timer for 10 minutes. Use those 10 minutes to reflect on God's faithfulness to you over this past month. When the timer ends, share with your group how God has been faithful in your life, and listen to your group members share how He has been faithful to them as well. When everyone is finished, pray together, thanking God and praising Him for His faithfulness.

GOING DEEPER

The word “worship” carries many implications. If you ask 5 different people to define worship, you will receive 5 different answers. In order to have a better understanding of how we can worship God with our lives, let’s turn to Scripture to look at how we can worship God with our lives. After all, He is the only One worthy of worship.

Spend time with Him:

One of the quickest ways to evaluate what has your heart is to see where you spend your time. If we claim to worship Christ, then it stands to reason that we will spend time with Him. When we spend time with Him, we demonstrate our love for Him and become more and more like Him.

1. Read Matthew 11:28-30.

Matthew 11:28-30

28 Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”

2. Who is invited to come to Christ in this passage of Scripture?

3. What promise do we have if we turn to Him?

4. What does it look like to worship God by spending time with Him in our world today?

Give Back to Him:

God has been so good and generous to us. One way that we can worship Him is to give back to Him out of the abundance He has given us. Our giving represents both our gratitude for Him and our trust in Him that He will continue to provide for us.

1. Read 2 Corinthians 9:6-11.

2 Corinthians 9:6-11

6 Remember this—a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop. 7 You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.” 8 And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others. 9 As the Scriptures say,
“They share freely and give generously to the poor. Their good deeds will be remembered forever.” 10 For God is the one who provides seed for the farmer and then bread to eat. In the same way, he will provide and increase your resources and then produce a great harvest of generosity in you. 11 Yes, you will be enriched in every way so that you can always be generous.

2. Why have we been blessed and provided for by God, according to this passage of Scripture?

3. What is the promise we have to claim if we practice generosity, according to this passage of Scripture?

4. What does it look like to worship God by giving back to Him in our world today?

Praise Him:

Of course, one way that we can worship God is through our praise, our outward declaration of our love for Him, His power, and His goodness. We can praise God individually, or we can join other believers in the church and praise Him together corporately. We can praise Him by singing songs and openly thanking Him for who He is and what He has done. One thing is certain: God delights in hearing our praise!

1. Read Psalm 150:1-6.

Psalm 150:1-6

1 Praise the Lord! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heaven! 2 Praise him for his mighty works; praise his unequaled greatness! 3 Praise him with a blast of the ram’s horn; praise him with the lyre and harp! 4 Praise him with the tambourine and dancing; praise him with strings and flutes! 5 Praise him with a clash of cymbals; praise him with loud clanging cymbals. 6 Let everything that breathes sing praises to the Lord! Praise the Lord!

2. Why are we called to praise God, according to this passage of Scripture? (Hint: See verse 2.)

3. Who is invited to praise Him according to this passage of Scripture?

4. What does it look like to worship God by praising Him in our world today?

Reflect:

After reading the Scripture and discussing what you read with your group, which of the areas of worship that we talked about today would you like to grow in: spending time with God, giving back to God, or praising God? What step can you take this week to grow in that area? Share that with your group. After everyone has shared, pray together, asking God to help you as you seek to be people who worship Him and Him alone with your entire lives.
