Party Pooper: Week 4

BIG IDEA

This week in our series Party Poopers, we are diving into a moment in Jesus’ life where He brought great joy and celebration while attending a wedding. It was at this wedding that He performed His very first miracle, demonstrating that He was no ordinary person. He is the all-powerful Son of God who had come to rescue the world from sin.

SMALL GROUP QUESTIONS

Bible Study

1. Read John 2:1-12. What was the problem at this wedding celebration, and what did Mary do about the problem?

John 2:1-12

1Before The next day there was a wedding celebration in the village of Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the celebration. 3 The wine supply ran out during the festivities, so Jesus’ mother told him, “They have no more wine.”
4 “Dear woman, that’s not our problem,” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come.” 5 But his mother told the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” 6 Standing nearby were six stone water jars, used for Jewish ceremonial washing. Each could hold twenty to thirty gallons. 7 Jesus told the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” When the jars had been filled, 8 he said, “Now dip some out, and take it to the master of ceremonies.” So the servants followed his instructions. 9 When the master of ceremonies tasted the water that was now wine, not knowing where it had come from (though, of course, the servants knew), he called the bridegroom over. 10 “A host always serves the best wine first,” he said. “Then, when everyone has had a lot to drink, he brings out the less expensive wine. But you have kept the best until now!” 11 This miraculous sign at Cana in Galilee was the first time Jesus revealed his glory. And his disciples believed in him. 12 After the wedding he went to Capernaum for a few days with his mother, his brothers, and his disciples.

2. What did Jesus understand about His timing?

3. What surprised and amazed the master of ceremonies?

4. What did Jesus demonstrate by performing this miracle?

Application

1. How did Jesus bring joy during His ministry (through this miracle he performed and beyond)?

2. How have you seen God’s power displayed in your own life?

3. Jesus demonstrated His great power when He performed a miracle at the wedding in John 2. In what area are you in need of God’s power to act?

MOVING FORWARD

By now, hopefully, you all have shared areas where you are desperate to see God’s power at work in your lives. Spend the next few moments praying for each other. As you pray, ask God’s power to be displayed mightily in each one of your lives.

GOING DEEPER

Jesus' miracle of turning water into wine was extraordinary. As He performed this miracle, Jesus was not just turning water into wine for a new wedding. He was revealing fundamental truths about Himself and His kingdom. Let's take a few moments to look at three significant details about this wedding and what they revealed about Jesus and His kingdom.

The Occasion- A Wedding:

It was not a coincidence that Jesus' first miracle took place at a wedding. You see, as we learned in the weekend message, Scripture contains symbolism that Jesus is the bridegroom and His followers are His bride. It also reveals that one day, there will be a great wedding banquet in Heaven. As Jesus attended this wedding, where He performed His first miracle, He must have been thinking about the future great wedding banquet that will take place.

1. Read Revelation 21:1-7.

Revelation 21:1-7

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared. And the sea was also gone. 2 And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, “Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them. 4 He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.” 5 And the one sitting on the throne said, “Look, I am making everything new!” And then he said to me, “Write this down, for what I tell you is trustworthy and true.” 6 And he also said, “It is finished! I am the Alpha and the Omega—the Beginning and the End. To all who are thirsty I will give freely from the springs of the water of life. 7 All who are victorious will inherit all these blessings, and I will be their God, and they will be my children.

2. Based on this passage of Scripture, why was a wedding a significant location for Jesus’ first miracle?

3. What stands out to you about this moment when Christ and His people come together “like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband?”

4. How does this passage of Scripture that we studied bring hope to followers of Christ?

The Miracle- Turning Water into Wine:

The fact that Jesus turned water into wine was also not a coincidence. The jars filled with water that Jesus turned into wine were ceremonial cleansing jars. As He turned that water into wine, Jesus must have been thinking about His blood, which would be shed to offer the ultimate cleansing when He died on the cross and rose from the grave.

1. Read Hebrews 9:13-15.

Hebrews 9:13-15

13 Under the old system, the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer could cleanse people’s bodies from ceremonial impurity. 14 Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins. 15 That is why he is the one who mediates a new covenant between God and people, so that all who are called can receive the eternal inheritance God has promised them. For Christ died to set them free from the penalty of the sins they had committed under that first covenant.

2. Describe the significance of Christ's blood sacrifice based on this passage of Scripture.

3. What was the purpose of Christ’s sacrifice, based on this passage of Scripture?

4. Based on this passage of Scripture, why is the miracle of turning water into wine significant as His very first miracle He performed?

The Response- Joy and Belief of the Disciples:

Jesus’ miracle brought joy and His disciples’ belief in Him. This joy, however, is only a snapshot of the joy to come in Christ for all who believe in Him. As Jesus performed this miracle, He must have considered the far greater joy that is to come when He returns and brings all people to Himself.

1. John 14:1-4. This passage of Scripture announces

John 14:1-4

1“Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. 2 There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? 3 When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am. 4 And you know the way to where I am going.”

2. What hope does Jesus offer if we place our faith in Him?

3. How does the truth from Jesus in this passage of Scripture bring joy despite our life's circumstances?

4. How does Christ’s joy impact us as we go throughout everyday life?

The news that Jesus brings life and joy must be shared. Take some time to review the Bridge Diagram, which can be found in the Segment 4 video. Then, break into groups of two or three and practice sharing the Bridge Diagram so that you will become more comfortable sharing your faith with the people around you. Commit to sharing the Bridge Diagram with at least one person over the next week.
