Welcome back to week 8 of this by the book course. This class may be coming to a close, but we are not done yet! We still have so much to learn from the books of Hebrews, James, and Jude. Last week, you finished the book of Hebrews and read James 1. As you finished the book of Hebrews, you were reminded of Christ’s perfect sacrifice on the cross and great examples of faith from the Old Testament, encouraged to persevere in your faith, and more. The first chapter of James challenged us to not just hear the word of God, but to also obey it. During your time together, Discuss what you learned as you read these books of the Bible with your group and answer the questions below:
1. What particularly impacted you during your Bible study reading this week?
2. How was Jesus the final, ultimate sacrifice, according to Hebrews 10:18?
3. Read Hebrews 10:23-25. Why are we called to hold on to our hope in Christ according to this passage of Scripture? How do we “hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm?”
4. Look back at Hebrews 11. What stands out to you about the faith of the people listed in this chapter?
5. Read James 1:22-25. Summarize James’ teaching in this passage of Scripture.
The people listed in Hebrews 11 serve as examples to follow. They were not perfect (no one is), but they trusted God and walked in faith and obedience. What is one step of obedience that you know God is calling you to take this week? How can you take that step of faith and obey Him this week?
Read James 2-5 and Jude,* one chapter for every day, using your Study Bible. Read the Bible study notes that correspond with the passage of Scripture you are reading. As you read, use your journal we provided for you to complete the SOAP method for each chapter of James and Jude that you read.
*Before you dive into studying the book of Jude, take time to read the introduction to Jude in your Study Bible. As you read, answer the questions below.
1. Who is the author and audience of Jude?
2. What is the purpose of Jude?
3. What are some of the key themes of Jude?
End your time together in prayer. Thank God for the examples of faith we have from Scripture who came before us. Ask Him to help you all grow in faith, taking the steps of obedience that He is calling you to take. Praise Him that He is able to “keep you from falling away.”
