We have reached our 7th week studying Scripture together in this By the Book course. Last week, you read Hebrews chapters 1-7. As you read, you were reminded of the supremacy of Christ, who is greater than everything. He rules and reigns supreme over everything. You were also reminded not to turn away from the truth of God’s word. During your time together, Discuss what you learned as you read these books of the Bible with your group and answer the questions below:
1. What particularly impacted you during your Bible study reading this week?
2. What did you learn about Jesus throughout your reading of Hebrews 1-7?
3. How does Jesus’ role as our High Priest impact our relationships with God the Father?
4. Read Hebrews 5:11-14. Summarize the writer of Hebrew’s words in this passage of Scripture.
5. How did Jesus change the Old Testament Sacrificial system?
Is there an area in your life where you need to grow up and mature? How is that immaturity impacting your relationship with Christ? Share that area with your group, along with one specific step you can take this week toward growth.
This week your homework includes reading James 1. Watch the James and Jude Introduction Video, where Pastor Todd will introduce the books of James and Jude. The book of James is extremely practical, reminding us that we are not only called to know God and His word, but to also obey it. Jude is a short book of the Bible focused on reminding readers to guard against false teachings and to encourage each other to remain faithful, especially those who are struggling. After all, God “is able to keep [us] from falling away” (Jude 23).
Read Hebrews chapters 8-13 and James 1,* one chapter for every day, using your Study Bible. Read the Bible study notes that correspond with the passage of Scripture you are reading. As you read, use your journal we provided for you to complete the SOAP method for each chapter of Hebrews and James that you read.
*Before you dive into studying the book of James, take time to read the introduction to James in your Study Bible. As you read, answer the questions below.
1. Who is the author and audience of James?
2. What is the purpose of James?
3. What are some of the key themes of James?
End your time together in prayer. Acknowledge that none of us have arrived or reached full spiritual maturity. Ask God to help each one of you as you take steps toward maturity so that you can become more and more like Christ.
