Can you believe we have already made it to week 3 of this By the Book class? The chapters you read over the last week continued to be action-packed, covering more of Jesus’ teachings and miracles as well as some of His final moments leading up to His arrest, death, and resurrection. There is so much to discuss from this reading, from Jesus’ I AM statements, to the powerful resurrection of His friend Lazarus from the dead, to some of His last moments with His disciples, and more. Talk about these chapters of John with your group now.
1. What particularly impacted you during your Bible study reading this week?
2. Jesus made several I AM statements during His teachings that are recorded in the chapters you read this week. Look back over these statements. Which of these statements stands out to you and why? (Hint: See John chapters 10, 11, 13, 14, and 15.)
3. Describe the impact of the resurrection of Lazarus in John 11. Why did his resurrection cause such an uprising among religious leaders?
4. How did Jesus redefine what it means to love in the Scripture you read this week?
5. Read John 15:1-8. Summarize Jesus’ message to His disciples in this passage of Scripture.
This week your homework includes reading the first chapter of 1st John. Watch the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd John Introduction Video, where Pastor Todd will introduce the books of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd John. Like the book of John, these books of the Bible were written by Jesus’ disciple John, who called himself “the disciple Jesus loved.” The book of 1st John teaches us what it means to be a follower of Christ, 2nd John warns against false teachings, and 3rd John is all about showing hospitality. These three practical books teach us that followers of Christ are to live differently and think differently than the rest of the world
Read John chapters 16-21 and 1st John chapter 1*, one chapter for every day, using your Study Bible. Read the Bible study notes that correspond with the passage of Scripture you are reading. As you read, use your journal we provided for you to complete the SOAP method for each chapter of John and 1st John that you read.
**Before you dive into studying the book of 1st John, take time to read the introduction to 1st John in your Study Bible. As you read, answer the questions below.
End your time together in prayer. Thank God for the sacrificial, never ending love of Jesus, who, although King, came to earth in the form of a servant and laid His life down for us. Ask Him to help you love the people around you in the same, sacrificial way that Jesus did while He was on earth.
