Welcome to week 2 of this By the Book course! This week, you read John chapters 2-8, action-packed chapters that teach us so much about who Jesus is. In these passages of Scripture, Jesus demonstrated that He has the power to heal, walk on water, feed a crowd of over 5,000 people, and more. Most astonishingly, because He is the Son of God, He revealed that He even has the power to save. Discuss these chapters of John with your group now.
1. What particularly impacted you during your Bible study reading this week?
2. What did Jesus reveal about eternal life in these passages of Scripture? (Hint: Jesus’ teachings about eternal life can be found in almost every one of these chapters of the book of John.)
3. Read John 2:23-25. What does Jesus know about people, and how is this evidence seen in Jesus’ conversations with Nicodemus in John 3 and the Samaritan woman in John 4?
4. What did Jesus prove that He has power over in these passages of Scripture that you read? (There is more than one answer to this question!)
5. Read John 8:31-32. What is Jesus looking for from His followers of Christ, according to this passage of Scripture?
Jesus has divine power over everything, including this earth and everything in it and eternal life. As His followers, we have the honor of spreading His message of hope and eternal life for all who believe in Him everywhere around us. What is one step you can take to spread His message of hope with someone who is far from Christ? This could be praying for someone in your life who is far from Christ, sharing the Bridge Diagram or your 2-minute-story with someone in your life who needs the hope of Christ, or something else. How does His power over everything give you confidence and boldness as you set out to make Him known?
Read John chapters 9-16, one chapter for every day, using your Study Bible. Read the Bible study notes that correspond with the passage of Scripture you are reading. As you read, use your journal we provided for you to complete the SOAP method for each chapter of John that you read.
End your time together in prayer. Declare God’s power over everything, both things here on earth and the things that are eternal. Thank Him for the hope that Jesus offers that everyone who places their faith in Him will experience eternal life with Him forever.
