Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path. Psalm 119:105
In his book, “The Principle of the Path: How to Get from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be,” Andy Stanley wrote, “What gets our attention determines our direction, and, ultimately, our destination. Or, if you would prefer the short version: attention determines direction.” What a powerful statement. “Attention determines direction.” It’s true, the things we are giving our attention to will determine our direction. I do not know about you, but I want God to determine my direction. I want His word to be my guiding force.
We read a lot about the importance of clinging to God and His word for wisdom and direction in the Bible. This is particularly true in Psalm 119, which tells us that Scripture is a lamp and a light for our path (verse 5). What does this mean? This verse teaches that Scripture gives us wisdom. It helps us walk wisely in all areas of our lives to make decisions well and live a life pleasing to God. It shows us how He wants us to live. How does the Bible give such wisdom? It contains the very words of God. These words are not empty. They are “alive” and “active” (Hebrews 4:12). They change us. They show us how to live when we feel lost or stuck. In other words, if we need wisdom, we can turn to Scripture, the very word of God.
If you find yourself in need of wisdom today, look to God’s word. Turn to Scripture. Read it. Spend time thinking about it. Ask God to use His word to guide your path and bring light where that path looks unclear. Ask God for the courage to obey His word each and every day. This is what it looks like to walk in wisdom. This is what it looks like to walk in the light of God’s word. As you know, even a small amount of light can pierce through the darkest night.
Today, just by reading this Daily Devotional, you took the time to seek out God’s wisdom. We are praying that God uses His Word to transform your life!
Let’s commit to spending time in God’s word and letting Him guide our lives. Today, find someone and tell them your desire to spend your life in God’s word. Ask them to hold you accountable and offer to do the same for them. Then, set a time each week to share what God has been teaching you with each other. You may want to find a group to read these devotionals with every week or, better yet, join one of our small groups!
Read Psalm 119:105-112 (NLT)
Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.I’ve promised it once, and I’ll promise it again: I will obey your righteous regulations.I have suffered much, O Lord; restore my life again as you promised.Lord, accept my offering of praise, and teach me your regulations. My life constantly hangs in the balance, but I will not stop obeying your instructions. The wicked have set their traps for me, but I will not turn from your commandments.Your laws are my treasure; they are my heart’s delight.I am determined to keep your decrees to the very end.
