Come, let us worship and bow down. Let us kneel before the Lord our maker, for he is our God. We are the people he watches over, the flock under his care. If only you would listen to his voice today! Psalm 95:6-7
When we think about worship, we often think about how, where, and when we worship. However, there is another element of worship, perhaps the most important element of worship, we must understand, and that is who we worship. You see, understanding who we worship impacts everything. It impacts why we worship, how we worship, where we worship, when we worship, and so much more.
Psalm 95 gives us a beautiful, clear picture of who we worship. In this chapter, the Psalmist writes, “For the Lord is a great God, a great King above all gods. He holds in His hands the depths of the earth and the mightiest mountains. The sea belongs to Him, for He made it. His hands formed the dry land, too (verses 3-5). What we are reading in these verses is just how big God is. We are getting a picture of His power and greatness. He created everything, and everything belongs to Him, from the depths of the earth and the highest peaks. This, my friends, is Who we worship. We worship the God of the universe, who created everything and holds everything together. Therefore, He is worthy of our worship.
God’s power and greatness demand a response. This is why, after contemplating God’s greatness, the Psalmist of Psalm 95 wrote, “Come, let us worship and bow down. Let us kneel before the Lord our maker, for He is our God” (verses 6-7). Because of God’s greatness, we are to approach Him with humility and reverence, understanding that He is God and we are not. We are His people.
To worship reverently means to understand Who we are worshiping and approach Him carefully, respectfully, and humbly in light of who He is. After all, He is all-powerful, all-knowing, all-loving, all-present, and so much more.
Pull out your journal or a notebook and write out a prayer to God modeled after the Psalmist’s prayer in Psalm 95. Write about how great God is and about how powerful He is. As you write about His greatness and power, let this remind you to come to Him with humility and reverence. How incredible that the God of the universe wants to communicate and hear from us.
1 Thessalonians 5:1-10 (NLT)
"Come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation.2 Let us come to him with thanksgiving. Let us sing psalms of praise to him.3 For the Lord is a great God, a great King above all gods.4 He holds in his hands the depths of the earth and the mightiest mountains.5 The sea belongs to him, for he made it. His hands formed the dry land, too.
6 Come, let us worship and bow down. Let us kneel before the Lord our maker,7 for he is our God.We are the people he watches over, the flock under his care.
If only you would listen to his voice today!8 The Lord says, “Don’t harden your hearts as Israel did at Meribah, as they did at Massah in the wilderness.9 For there your ancestors tested and tried my patience, even though they saw everything I did.10 For forty years I was angry with them, and I said,‘They are a people whose hearts turn away from me. They refuse to do what I tell them.’"
