And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. Romans 8:38
Throughout Scripture, we learn that God is all-powerful. This means that God is not only more powerful than anything, but He also holds all of the power. There is nothing outside of His control or power, and there is nothing that He cannot do. As we think about God’s great power, Paul explains in Romans 8 that we can see His power demonstrated through His love. As a result, we followers of Christ have every reason to believe in and walk confidently in His great, all-powerful love for us.
We have now reached the final portion of Romans 8 in our Bible study together today. In some respects, it is as if Paul’s entire teaching in Romans 8 is leading up to this moment. He has talked about the new lives that followers of Christ have in the Holy Spirit, the truth that Christ followers are children of God, and the hope of eternal life that we have in Christ. Then, in the verses we have studied together this week, he shifted to God’s great love for His people. He asked a question in verse 35 that he did not immediately answer: “Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love?” Finally, in verse 38, he answered, “I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love” (verse 38). Marvel in this deep truth for a moment. There is literally nothing that can separate us from God’s love. Why? Because His love is all-powerful. That’s why Paul continued by giving a list of all of the most seemingly powerful forces on earth- not death, life, our fears, or worries, “the powers of hell,” the sky or the earth, or anything else “in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God” (verses 38-39). I love how Paul wrote that he was “convinced” by the power of God’s love for us. He had a deep-rooted understanding of and confidence in God’s great love for us.
God’s great love for you is deep and powerful. You never, for one moment, have to wonder if God still loves you. His love for you is not based on anything, and it cannot be taken away. God’s love for you remains, and nothing can stop it. Will you say, along with Paul, “I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love?”

Romans 8:31-39
31 What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us? 32 Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else? 33 Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one—for God himself has given us right standing with himself. 34 Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us.
35 Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? 36 (As the Scriptures say, “For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.”) 37 No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.
38 And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. 39 No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
