Why Try: Week 3 - Thursday

God has spoken plainly, and I have heard it many times: Power, O God, belongs to you. Psalm 62:11

In our Bible study this week, we have been challenged to stop seeking to hold on to control over our lives. After all, we have never been and never will be truly in control. All of our attempts for control have been and will be in vain. Now, this truth that we are not in control may feel unsettling. If you like to have control, take heart! God, the One who is in control, is all-knowing and all-powerful. As a result, you can trust Him with everything.

David wrote about God’s great power in Psalm 62. As he considered his enemies working against him, he turned to God and His power. He wrote, “I wait quietly before God, for my victory comes from Him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will never be shaken” (verses 1-2). During his difficulties and hardships, he chose to trust God, who is in control of everything. Next, he described the difficulties he faced, saying, “So many enemies against one man—all of them trying to kill me” (verse 3). The threat against David was great. His life was on the line. Amidst all the threats and chaos, David looked to God and His power, trusting Him rather than trying to control the situation on his own. Through everything he faced, David declared, “Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in Him” (verse 5). David looked to God alone for help, knowing that He holds all power and control. That is why he continued writing, “He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will not be shaken” (verse 6). Because David knew God holds all power and control, he had great comfort and confidence even when he faced difficulties. As a result of God’s great power, David entreated everyone to put their trust in God, too (verse 8). As Psalm 62 came to a close, he wrote, “God has spoken plainly, and I have heard it many times: Power, O God, belongs to You” (verse 11). David understood that God holds all of the power because he had experienced His power in his own life. Because David had experienced God’s power with his own eyes, he trusted Him instead of trying to control things on his own.

My friend, you have an all-powerful God who is in control of everything. You do not have to strive for control. Instead, you can trust your God to take care of you every single day. Will you lean on Him and His power today?

Moving Toward Action

As you remember that God’s plans are far greater than yours and that you can trust Him with everything, think back to a time in your life where God’s plans proved to be far greater than your own. As you reflect on that time, take time to thank Him for how He has worked in your life and commit to trusting Him to continue working in your life today. There is no one greater to trust your life with than Him.

Going Deeper

Psalm 62:1-12

I wait quietly before God,
for my victory comes from him.
He alone is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress where I will never be shaken.

So many enemies against one man—
all of them trying to kill me.
To them I’m just a broken-down wall
    or a tottering fence.
They plan to topple me from my high position.
They delight in telling lies about me.
They praise me to my face
but curse me in their hearts. Interlude

Let all that I am wait quietly before God,
for my hope is in him.
He alone is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress where I will not be shaken.
My victory and honor come from God alone.
He is my refuge, a rock where no enemy can reach me.
O my people, trust in him at all times.
Pour out your heart to him,
for God is our refuge. Interlude

Common people are as worthless as a puff of wind,
and the powerful are not what they appear to be.
If you weigh them on the scales,
together they are lighter than a breath of air.

10 Don’t make your living by extortion
or put your hope in stealing.
And if your wealth increases,
don’t make it the center of your life.

11 God has spoken plainly,
and I have heard it many times:
Power, O God, belongs to you;
12     unfailing love, O Lord, is yours.
Surely you repay all people
according to what they have done.
