Created in each human being is a deep desire to worship, knowing that life is not about us but about Someone far greater than us. The question is, who or what do we worship? You see, Scripture reveals that we were not created to worship just anyone or anything; we were created to worship God the Father. Any worship of anyone or anything other than Him falls short and leaves us empty. He alone is worthy of every ounce of our worship.
1 John 1 reveals one of the most fundamental ways that we can worship God, and that is to commit to following Him and surrendering our lives to Him. In this passage of Scripture, John calls readers to live in the light of Christ instead of the darkness. He wrote, “So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth. But if we are living in the light as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, cleanses us from all sin” (verses 6-7). Further down, he explains that if we claim we don’t have sin in our lives, we are deceiving ourselves, “but if we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness” (verses 8-9). We may not realize it, but confessing our sins and giving our lives to God is a part of our worship. It requires that we admit our need for Him, confess sin in our lives, ask for His help, and commit to following Him. There is no greater thing we can do with our lives.
Think about your life for a moment. Have you surrendered your life to Him? If so, do your actions point to Him, the One who saved you? If not, what is holding you back? Turn to Him today.
We learned today that worship requires that we surrender our lives to Him and no one else. Take some time to confess your sins to Him and turn to Him and Him alone. Commit to following Him with your entire life. Ask Him to help you live a life of surrender to Him every single day of your life.
We proclaim to you the one who existed from the beginning, whom we have heard and seen. We saw him with our own eyes and touched him with our own hands. He is the Word of life. 2 This one who is life itself was revealed to us, and we have seen him. And now we testify and proclaim to you that he is the one who is eternal life. He was with the Father, and then he was revealed to us. 3 We proclaim to you what we ourselves have actually seen and heard so that you may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. 4 We are writing these things so that you may fully share our joy.
5 This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all. 6 So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth. 7 But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.
8 If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. 9 But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts.
