What If: Week 1 - Wednesday

Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. Matthew 6:33

It has been said that the things we focus on have a significant impact. Indeed, the things we focus on dictate the words we say, the things we do, the decisions we make, and so much more. Even more, the things we focus on dictate if we worry and if we do not worry. In order to let go of worry, we have to focus on our God and what truly matters in life.

Jesus taught listeners about the importance of focusing on Him in Matthew 6. In this passage of Scripture, Jesus taught a crowd of listeners not to worry. He said to them, "So don't worry about these things, saying, 'What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?'" (verse 31) Food, drink, and clothing are central needs of every human being. If there is no room to worry about these basic needs, there is no need to worry about anything. These concerns consume the thoughts of those who do not believe in God, Jesus explained (verse 32). Instead of worrying, Jesus commanded, “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need” (verse 33). Instead of worrying, we are called to turn to God and the things of Him. Focusing on Him and His kingdom puts everything in perspective and helps us look to the hope of eternal life with Him one day instead of our current circumstances.

It is time for you and me to focus on God and His kingdom over our worries. When we set our hearts and minds on Him, we find peace, knowing that in the end, God will make everything right. We have a choice: to focus on our worries or to focus on our God, who is in control over everything. When we choose to set our minds on God and His kingdom, we will experience His peace.

Moving Toward Action

What would it look like for you to focus on God and His kingdom today instead of your worries? Maybe you can memorize the monthly memory verse, listen to worship music today on your drive to and home from work, or watch a past weekend message online. Whatever you decide, purposefully choose today to focus on God and His kingdom instead of your worries. At the end of the day, take note of the impact that focusing on God's kingdom had on your worries as you went throughout your day.

34 “So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.
