What If: Week 1 - Tuesday

Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? Matthew 6:27

Jesus proved that He was a master teacher during His ministry on earth. Because He was a master teacher, He utilized many teaching methods. He told stories, made many comparisons between earthly things and eternal things, demonstrated His power, and so much more. One of the teaching methods that He utilized while on this earth was asking good questions. You see, asking the right question is a remarkable teaching strategy to help listeners think deeply about the subject matter.

As Jesus was teaching about worry in Matthew 6, He asked a question that must have made His listeners pause. Still, today, it makes me pause and think. He asked, "Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?" This was not a question that listeners were meant to answer out loud. Why? They already knew the answer. We, also, already know the answer.  Of course, our worries cannot add even one second to our lives. Acknowledging that our worries cannot add one second to our lives makes worrying seem fruitless. Jesus’ question about worry also brings another observation: Worrying cannot add to our lives, but it can certainly take away. It keeps us from living the abundant lives that God desires for us. It takes away from our joy. It keeps us from being present in the moment. Indeed, worry is a bad, bad companion.

While worry often disguises itself as a form of self-protection, it only takes away from our lives. If we want to wage war on worry, we must acknowledge the lousy friend it has been to us. When we realize that worry only takes away, we can more easily let go of our tendency to worry and choose to trust God with the future instead.

Moving Toward Action

Pull out a journal or notebook and write down Matthew 6:27, "Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?" Then, answer the question. After answering the question, take a few moments and write out how your answer to Jesus' question in Matthew 6 will help you fight against worry in your life. As you go throughout your day, let the truth of the Scripture we studied today help you let go of worry and lean into your Heavenly Father instead.

Going Deeper

Matthew 6:26-30

26 Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? 27 Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?

28 “And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, 29 yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. 30 And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith?
