Wake-Up Call Week 3 Wednesday

Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith. Galatians 6:10

In my opinion, one of the greatest things that can be said about someone is that they are kind. In a world where kindness is becoming less and less valued, kindness is essential. I truly believe that kindness can change the world. Scripture teaches that kindness is an expression of love. It points people to Christ and His great love for them.

Paul urged readers to practice kindness in Galatians 6. As he wrote, he urged readers to not "get tired of doing what is good" (verse 9). He continued by explaining that those who do not give up doing good will receive their rewards at just the right time (verse 9). He then goes on to conclude, "therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith" (verse 10). This call to do good is a call to kindness. It is a call to live in such a way that all around us can see God's love because of the kindness and goodness we show. Notice the word "everyone" in verse 10. There is not one person whom we are exempt from showing loving kindness.

We must not overlook the six words that begin Paul's words in Galatians 6:10: "Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity." Paul's call to do good to others, to show kindness to them, is a call to do good" whenever we have the opportunity." This begs the question, when do we have the opportunity to do good to others? When do we have the opportunity to show kindness? The only answer I can think of is "always." We always have the opportunity to do good. We always have the opportunity to show loving-kindness to others. And we must make the most of every second by doing good to others. One of the best things we can do for others is show kindness, which shows them just how much God loves them.

Let's heed Paul's instructions in Galatians 6:10. Let's do good to others whenever we have the chance, knowing that every second presents an opportunity to do good. Let's be kind, modeling Christ's great love for each person that we see every day.

MOVING TOWARD ACTION

Start today to develop an attitude of kindness, one step and one person at a time. Who can you show kindness to right now? What small act of kindness can you show them? When you decide what act of kindness you will show, make a plan and set a time and place to show kindness. As you show kindness to that person, and all of the other people around you, be sure to remind them how much God loves them and the kindness He has shown to them.

GOING DEEPER

Read Galatians 6:1-10(NLT)

Dear brothers and sisters, if another believer is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself. Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. If you think you are too important to help someone, you are only fooling yourself. You are not that important.

Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job well done, and you won’t need to compare yourself to anyone else. For we are each responsible for our own conduct.

Those who are taught the word of God should provide for their teachers, sharing all good things with them.

Don’t be misled—you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant. Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest decay and death from that sinful nature. But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit. So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith.
