Some of the most fascinating and important moments of Jesus’ ministry on earth took place during the last week of His life. One of these moments is what Bible scholars often call the “triumphal entry.” You see, Jesus often concealed His identity and talked about how it was not time for everyone to know about Him, but during His last week, He began revealing more of who He was. Jesus did not miss this moment to let the world know that He was the Messiah.
As Jesus entered the city of Jerusalem during the last week of His life, He told His disciples to go ahead of Him into a village where they would find a young donkey (Luke 19:28-30). He instructed them to untie the donkey and bring it to Him (verse 30). They did exactly what He said and brought the donkey to Him so that He could ride it (verse 35). As He did this, something fascinating happened. Crowds gathered and they “spread out their garments on the road ahead of Him” (verse 36). Ultimately, crowds gathered and started singing, shouting, and praising God (verse 37). They said, “Blessings on the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!” (verse 38). These people were praising Jesus. Many of them believed that He had come to rescue Israel from the rule of Rome. They did not know He had a greater and better plan to rescue them from their sins.
Though the crowd had many that misunderstood Jesus’ purpose, they did get something right. Jesus was, and is, worthy of our worship. They shouted, cried, and praised God for the hope they found in the coming King. May we always remember what He has done and praise Him every single day.
While most of the people worshiping Jesus that day did not realize that He was King of Kings, we certainly do. Because He is the King of Kings, He deserves to be worshiped. Spend a few minutes listening to the song Hosanna by Hillsong Worship and worship Jesus. Praise Him for all that He has done for us.
"After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 30 “Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it.’”
32 Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them. 33 As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?”
34 They replied, “The Lord needs it.”
35 They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. 36 As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road.
37 When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:
38 “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!”
“Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!”
40 “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”
