Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Matthew 7:24
Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are filled with teachings from Jesus. Jesus taught listeners about Heaven, God the Father, how His followers were required to live, and much more. His teachings are key for anyone who wants to live a life that honors Him. The question is, what will we do with His teaching? When we read His teaching, we have a decision to make. Will we merely view it as good teaching but do nothing with it, or will we choose to follow it?
Jesus finished teaching His very well-known “Sermon on the Mount” by giving a call to obey His teaching. As He ended His message that day, He said, “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise, and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock” (verses 24-25). Anyone who follows the teachings of Jesus and obeys them is building a firm foundation for their lives.
Why do we need a firm foundation? We need a firm foundation so that we will be protected and remain standing during storms that arise. When Christ is our foundation, He will strengthen and uphold us through any storm we face. Although the world and the evil one want to pull us apart, He keeps us together. He is our solid rock if we will follow and obey Him.
Our calling today is to not just listen to Jesus’ teachings but actually do what He says. When we do this, we act in wisdom and build a strong foundation for our lives.
Take time today to read through the Sermon on the Mount, which is found in Matthew 5-7. As you read, take note of what God is teaching you. What is He calling you to do through His Word? Pick one thing that stands out to you in this reading, and commit to obey whatever He has taught you.
Matthew 7:24-29 (NLT)
“Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. 25 Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. 26 But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. 27 When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.”
28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, 29 for he taught with real authority—quite unlike their teachers of religious law."
