Treasure Hunt: Week 1 - Thursday

Furthermore, because we are united with Christ, we have received an inheritance from God, for he chose us in advance, and he makes everything work out according to his plan. Ephesians 1:11

Earlier in our Bible study, we talked about the remarkable truth that when we place our faith in Christ, we become children of God. This title, children of God, carries many implications. One of the implications of being God’s child is that we will receive an inheritance from Him. This inheritance is unlike any other inheritance any father on earth will pass on to his children. In fact, the inheritance that His children will receive is greater than any inheritance that even the wealthiest king on earth will leave his children.

In Ephesians 1, Paul discusses the inheritance that the children of God will receive. He writes, "Because we are united with Christ, we have received an inheritance from God" (verse 11). What inheritance will we receive? We will receive the inheritance of eternal life in Jesus Christ. This eternal life with Jesus will be more extraordinary, more meaningful, and more wonderful than we could ever imagine. There is no better gift that we could be given than life with Him forever.

The book of Revelation gives us a glimpse of what life with Christ forever will be like. John, the writer of the book of Revelation, writes that when we experience eternal life with Christ, God "will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever” (Revelation 21:4). A life where God dwells with His people that is absent of pain, tears, and heartache is the inheritance we have to look forward to. What remarkable hope that we followers of Christ have to hold on to!

What a wonderful, gracious, and loving God who gives us an inheritance that we certainly do not deserve. Even on the most difficult days that we face on this earth, we can look toward the inheritance that is promised to all of those who place their faith in Christ. Praise God for the inheritance that is waiting for us when we spend eternity with Him forever!

Moving Toward Action

Take a few moments to write out a prayer of gratitude. Thank God for all that He has done for you. Thank Him for the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus, on the cross that bought us our inheritance of eternal life. He is so worthy of our praise!

Going Deeper

Ephesians 1:7-15

He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins. He has showered his kindness on us, along with all wisdom and understanding.

God has now revealed to us his mysterious will regarding Christ—which is to fulfill his own good plan. 10 And this is the plan: At the right time he will bring everything together under the authority of Christ—everything in heaven and on earth. 11 Furthermore, because we are united with Christ, we have received an inheritance from God, for he chose us in advance, and he makes everything work out according to his plan.

12 God’s purpose was that we Jews who were the first to trust in Christ would bring praise and glory to God. 13 And now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago. 14 The Spirit is God’s guarantee that he will give us the inheritance he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people. He did this so we would praise and glorify him.

15 Ever since I first heard of your strong faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for God’s people everywhere,
