Pointless: Week 4 - Saturday

You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever. Psalm 16:11

In their quest for meaning and purpose, people are constantly seeking things they believe will bring them joy. Solomon thought possessions, relationships, wealth, career success, and more would bring him deep joy. What he ultimately found, however, is what every single person on earth finds: nothing can bring us joy apart from God. He is the supreme source of joy.

Solomon’s father, David, understood that ultimate joy and satisfaction can only be found in God alone, and he wrote about it in Psalm 16. This Psalm from David is a Psalm of praise to God for all He has done. As he wrote the words of this Psalm, David said, “I know the Lord is always with me. I will not be shaken, for He is right beside me” (verse 8). Because God was always with David, David knew that nothing in this world could shake him. He continued writing, “No wonder my heart is glad, and I rejoice. My body rests in safety. For you will not leave my soul among the dead or allow your holy one to rot in the grave” (verses 9-10). He knew that God was taking care of Him, so he could rest and find peace in Him. He also knew that God is the source of life, bringing joy and satisfaction that can only be found in the hope of eternal life that we have in Him. That is why David concluded this Psalm saying, “You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of Your presence and the pleasures of living with You forever” (verse 11). David understood that ultimate joy can be found in God’s presence, and nowhere else. After all, God is the one who gives eternal life.

What David understood as he wrote Psalm 16 is true for us today. There is no true joy to be found apart from Him. In His presence, there is deep, ultimate joy. After all, He and He alone is the source of eternal life. Anything else that we turn to for joy will ultimately fall short. There is no source of eternal life other than Him.

What is it that you have been looking to for joy and satisfaction other than God? Have you looked for satisfaction from something in this world, believing that if you could only achieve it, then you would be fulfilled? If you look to anything else besides God, you will end up disappointed and empty every single time. If you, however, turn to God, you will find deep, never-ending joy in His presence. Will you turn to Him today to bring you satisfaction and joy? If you do, you will never find yourself disappointed. What an incredible promise we have to claim in Him!

Moving Toward Action

One way we look to God for true, genuine joy in the Lord is through worship. Make plans this weekend to worship God with us at one of our weekend services. He is the one who brings great joy to our weary hearts. We will see you there!

Going Deeper

Psalm 16:1-11

Keep me safe, O God,
for I have come to you for refuge.

I said to the Lord, “You are my Master!
Every good thing I have comes from you.”
The godly people in the land
    are my true heroes!
    I take pleasure in them!
Troubles multiply for those who chase after other gods.
I will not take part in their sacrifices of blood
or even speak the names of their gods.

Lord, you alone are my inheritance, my cup of blessing.
You guard all that is mine.
The land you have given me is a pleasant land.
    What a wonderful inheritance!

I will bless the Lord who guides me;
even at night my heart instructs me.
I know the Lord is always with me.
I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me.

No wonder my heart is glad, and I rejoice.
    My body rests in safety.
10 For you will not leave my soul among the dead
or allow your holy one to rot in the grave.
11 You will show me the way of life,
granting me the joy of your presence
and the pleasures of living with you forever.
