Pointless: Week 3 - Saturday

Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable. Hebrews 4:13

We were reminded during the weekend message that, “When we live our lives for an audience of one, then everything we do matters.” Indeed, when we live solely for God, our behavior, thoughts, and emotions change. We understand that this one life that God has given us matters, so we must leverage every bit of it for Him and His kingdom. When we live for Him and Him alone, all that matters is how we leverage our lives to know Christ and make Christ known, knowing that we are accountable to Him.

Solomon gives us a compelling reason in Ecclesiastes 9 to stop living our lives for anything in this world. He explained in this chapter, “I have observed something else under the sun. The fastest runner doesn’t always win the race, and the strongest warrior doesn’t always win the battle. The wise sometimes go hungry, and the skillful are not necessarily wealthy. And those who are educated don’t always lead successful lives. It is all decided by chance, by being in the right place at the right time” (verse 11). This is Solomon’s very long-winded way of saying, “Life is unpredictable.” Try as we might, we cannot truly know the future. Because life is unpredictable and uncertain, we cannot put our hope in anyone or anything in this world.

The writer of Hebrews entreats us to live solely for God, an audience of one in Hebrews 4. He wrote in this passage of Scripture, “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before His eyes” (verse 13). In other words, God sees everything. He sees our every action and knows our innermost thoughts. There is no hiding from Him. He sees everything. Even more, the writer of Hebrews continued, saying, “He is the one to whom we are accountable” (verse 13). God, not our stuff, or people, or anything else in this world, is the one we are accountable to. This truth should motivate us to live for Him alone as we walk through each day, the only One whom we will give an account of how we lived one day.

This world will try to capture our attention and affection, tempting us to live for the people and things of this world. We must not be sidetracked. God sees everything we say and do; there is no hiding anything from Him, and we are accountable to Him. Let’s remain singularly focused with our eyes set solely on Him.

Moving Toward Action

Will you commit to living for an audience of one, God alone? Make plans this weekend to worship Him alongside us at one of our weekend services. As you worship, commit to living for Him alone, the one to whom you are accountable to. He is the source of life, hope, meaning, purpose, and peace.

Going Deeper

Hebrews 4:1-16

God’s promise of entering his rest still stands, so we ought to tremble with fear that some of you might fail to experience it. For this good news—that God has prepared this rest—has been announced to us just as it was to them. But it did them no good because they didn’t share the faith of those who listened to God. For only we who believe can enter his rest. As for the others, God said,

“In my anger I took an oath:
‘They will never enter my place of rest,’”

even though this rest has been ready since he made the world. We know it is ready because of the place in the Scriptures where it mentions the seventh day: “On the seventh day God rested from all his work.” But in the other passage God said, “They will never enter my place of rest.”

So God’s rest is there for people to enter, but those who first heard this good news failed to enter because they disobeyed God. So God set another time for entering his rest, and that time is today. God announced this through David much later in the words already quoted:

“Today when you hear his voice,
    don’t harden your hearts.”

Now if Joshua had succeeded in giving them this rest, God would not have spoken about another day of rest still to come. So there is a special rest still waiting for the people of God. 10 For all who have entered into God’s rest have rested from their labors, just as God did after creating the world. 11 So let us do our best to enter that rest. But if we disobey God, as the people of Israel did, we will fall.

12 For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable.

14 So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. 15 This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. 16 So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.
