Placebo Effect: Wednesday

Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. Psalm 1:1-2

We all know that reading Scripture is critical for followers of Christ. After all, the Bible is God's word to us, filled with His teaching, instruction, and more. If you are reading this Daily Devotion, you certainly understand the importance of diving into Scripture regularly. Did you know, however, that there is a promise you have to claim if you read Scripture on a regular basis? Scripture promises that those who read Scripture regularly will not just grow, but flourish.

The very first Psalm reminds us of the significance of regularly studying Scripture. The Psalmist of Psalm 1 writes, “Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night" (verses 1-2). The Psalmist immediately reminds us that those who delight in God’s word have great joy. This deep joy is not the only thing promised to those who regularly meditate on God's word. The Psalmist continued, writing, “They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do” (verse 3). Those who delight in and focus on Scripture every day are fruitful and prosperous. They produce fruit that points others to Christ, becoming more and more like Him. What a remarkable promise we have to claim!

My friend, spending time in God’s Word has a profound impact. It changes us from the inside out. Daily delighting in God’s word changes us for the better. Every time we delight in and reflect on God's word, we become more and more like Christ. Praise God for the promise we have to claim! Keep diving into the Word of God each day—delight in it. You will indeed reap the reward!

Moving Toward Action

Take a few moments to reflect on the fruit of spending time in God’s word. How has your daily time in God’s word impacted you? Has it encouraged you, challenged you, or helped you to grow? After reflecting on the impact of daily reading Scripture, thank God for the gift of His word, and commit to a lifetime of studying and delighting in reading your Bible every day of your life.

Going Deeper

Psalm 1:1-6

Oh, the joys of those who do not
follow the advice of the wicked,
    or stand around with sinners,
    or join in with mockers.
But they delight in the law of the Lord,
meditating on it day and night.
They are like trees planted along the riverbank,
    bearing fruit each season.
Their leaves never wither,
and they prosper in all they do.

But not the wicked!
They are like worthless chaff, scattered by the wind.
They will be condemned at the time of judgment.
Sinners will have no place among the godly.
For the Lord watches over the path of the godly,
but the path of the wicked leads to destruction.
