In our world, the word “love” is used so often and so casually that it has lost its significance. In our world, many view love as something that must be earned and can be lost at any time. This is not the way with God. His love is entirely different. While earthly love is fickle and changing, God’s love never changes. God’s love cannot be earned. His love is freely given simply because He loves us. This is the promise we have to cling to: we are unconditionally loved by God.
The apostle Paul reminds us of God's love in Romans 8. In this passage of Scripture, Paul asked a rhetorical question: "Can anything separate us from Christ's love?" (verse 35). The implied obvious answer to this question is, "No, of course, nothing can separate us from God's love." Nothing in the entire world can separate us from the never-ending and never-giving-up love of God. Paul expounded on the truth that nothing can separate us from God’s love several verses later. He wrote, “And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, nor angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love…Nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord” (verses 38-39). Take a moment to reflect on the magnitude of the truth in these verses. There is literally nothing that can separate us from God’s love. God’s love is so grand and unchanging that we can walk confidently every day knowing that we are deeply, unconditionally, and forever loved by God.
My friend, you are deeply loved by God. In a world where love is fickle and wavering, you need only to look to Him and His love. God's love for you is never-ending and unchanging. Absolutely nothing can separate you from God's love. May you walk confidently in the steadfast love of God today.
Write down Romans 8:39 on a notecard. Place it where you will see it often. Every time you see the verse, let it be a reminder that the God of the universe loves you and that nothing could ever separate you from His love.
31 What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us? 32 Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else? 33 Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one—for God himself has given us right standing with himself. 34 Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us.
35 Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? 36 (As the Scriptures say, “For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.”) 37 No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.
38 And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. 39 No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
