Perhaps the first miracle that Jesus performed is one of His most unique, unexpected miracles. It was not among a crowd of sick people or showing His power over nature. His first miracle took place at a wedding. Because this was Jesus' first miracle, no one had seen Him demonstrate His great power through miracles yet. At this wedding, suddenly, the wine had run out. This would have completely humiliated the hosts of the wedding party. When Mary learned what had happened, she knew there was hope. You see, Jesus was at the party, and He could do something about the lack of wine.
We read in Luke 2 that Jesus was attending a wedding when “the wine supply ran out during the festivities” (verse 3). Today, running out of food and drinks at a wedding is seen as an embarrassment, but in Jesus' day, it was even more of a big deal. Something needed to be done to keep the wedding hosts from facing deep embarrassment. Mary, the mother of Jesus, was also at the party (verse 1). When she discovered the problem, she turned to the One who she knew could fix it: Jesus. She asked Jesus to step in and help with this issue. Why did she invite Jesus to step in during this situation? She knew He was capable of doing something about it.
The truth is that Jesus is all-powerful and can step into any situation and work in ways we could never imagine. The day before Jesus turned water into wine, He said to Nathaniel, who was amazed that Jesus knew about him before they had met: “You will see greater things than this… I tell you the truth, you will all see heaven open and the angels of God going up and down on the Son of Man, the one who is the stairway between heaven and earth” (verses 50-51). Jesus was letting Nathaniel know that He had come to do remarkable things that far surpass human ability. After all, He is the Son of God.
Still today, Christ is working and moving in power. The question is, do we recognize how He is working? Do we trust that He is still capable of demonstrating His great power in our lives today? We serve an all-powerful Savior who is capable of far more than we could ask or imagine. Will you trust Him today?
Still today, Jesus can perform miracles and work in our lives. What area of your life do you need Christ to work in? Turn to Him in prayer now. Ask Him to work in that area of your life, trusting that He has the power to do so and that He will work according to our good and His glory.
35 The following day John was again standing with two of his disciples. 36 As Jesus walked by, John looked at him and declared, “Look! There is the Lamb of God!” 37 When John’s two disciples heard this, they followed Jesus.
38 Jesus looked around and saw them following. “What do you want?” he asked them.
They replied, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”
39 “Come and see,” he said. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon when they went with him to the place where he was staying, and they remained with him the rest of the day.
40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of these men who heard what John said and then followed Jesus. 41 Andrew went to find his brother, Simon, and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means “Christ”).
42 Then Andrew brought Simon to meet Jesus. Looking intently at Simon, Jesus said, “Your name is Simon, son of John—but you will be called Cephas” (which means “Peter”).
43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Come, follow me.” 44 Philip was from Bethsaida, Andrew and Peter’s hometown.
45 Philip went to look for Nathanael and told him, “We have found the very person Moses and the prophets wrote about! His name is Jesus, the son of Joseph from Nazareth.”
46 “Nazareth!” exclaimed Nathanael. “Can anything good come from Nazareth?”
“Come and see for yourself,” Philip replied.
47 As they approached, Jesus said, “Now here is a genuine son of Israel—a man of complete integrity.”
48 “How do you know about me?” Nathanael asked.
Jesus replied, “I could see you under the fig tree before Philip found you.”
49 Then Nathanael exclaimed, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God—the King of Israel!”
50 Jesus asked him, “Do you believe this just because I told you I had seen you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.” 51 Then he said, “I tell you the truth, you will all see heaven open and the angels of God going up and down on the Son of Man, the one who is the stairway between heaven and earth.”
