And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Deuteronomy 6:6-7a
The list of things for parents to teach their children may seem never-ending. From how to walk, talk, build friendships, and so much more, children are looking to their parents to learn how to navigate this life. Of all of the things that we can teach the children in our lives, there is one thing to teach them that will always be at the top of the list: to love God more than anything and to have a personal relationship with Him.
Scripture instructs us to teach the children in our lives about God and His word in Deuteronomy 6. This is a passage of Scripture where Moses was giving the Israelites instructions from God about how they were to live. The instruction began with a call to love God with their entire beings and more than anything else (verse 5). Next, Moses instructed that they were to teach their children about God’s commandments. He told the Israelite people to repeat God's commandments "again and again" to the children in their lives (verse 7). The call that Moses gave the Israelites in this passage of Scripture was to constantly teach their children about the truth from God’s word over and over so that God’s word would be ingrained in the hearts and minds of their children.
The more children learn about God and His word, the more they will come to know Him. The more they will remember Him as they go throughout their days. What the children in our lives need more than anything else is a personal relationship with Christ. By consistently teaching them about Him and His word, we are building a solid foundation for them as they grow in their faith and make their faith their own. Psalm 1 gives us insight into the outcome of living lives rooted in God’s word. The writer of this Psalm wrote, “Oh, the joys of those who…delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit in each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do” (verses 1-3). When we and our children live lives rooted in the word of God, we will thrive, bearing fruit that comes from being firmly planted in God’s word. This is the message we must teach the children in our lives.
We have a responsibility to our children. We get to teach them about God, His word, and how to live a life that honors Him. Will you take your critically important role seriously and commit to teaching your children about God and His word?
Take time today to share with the children in your life what you learned during your Bible study today. Tell them that you are here to talk to them about God and faith. Encourage them to study the Bible for themselves (whether it is a children's Bible or a study Bible). As they study the Bible more and more, they will develop their relationships with Him.
Psalm 1:1-6
1 Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. 2 But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. 3 They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.
4 But not the wicked! They are like worthless chaff, scattered by the wind. 5 They will be condemned at the time of judgment. Sinners will have no place among the godly. 6 For the Lord watches over the path of the godly, but the path of the wicked leads to destruction.
