Not by Sight: Thursday

“Yes, Lord, I believe!” the man said. And he worshiped Jesus. John 9:38

One of the key elements of faith is complete surrender to the person or thing we are trusting. For example, if I have complete faith that a chair will support me when I sit down, I will fully and confidently sit in it without wavering. If I have doubts that it will support me, I will sit slowly and partially, or maybe even not at all. When it comes to our faith in God, genuine faith demonstrates complete surrender and trust in Him, regardless of our circumstances.

The man who had been born blind, whom we have been studying all week in John 9, demonstrated surrender to Christ as a result of His faith in Him. Jesus had miraculously healed him and restored his sight. After he was healed, this man was questioned by religious leaders about what had happened and who had healed him. These religious leaders did not want to acknowledge that Jesus had the power to restore sight to the blind. This man, in bold faith, stood up to the religious leaders and called them out for their lack of faith, which resulted in him being thrown out of the synagogue (verse 34). Scripture tells us that Jesus found this man after he heard that he had been kicked out of the synagogue (verse 35). Jesus asked this man, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?" (verse 35). After expressing a desire to "want to believe in Him," Jesus explained that He was the Son of Man” (verses 36-37). At that, in an act of surrender, the man said, “Yes, Lord, I believe!” and proceeded to fall down and worship Jesus. This man believed and surrendered his life, which was demonstrated by his worship.

Like the man in John 9, the question we must answer is "Do we believe in Jesus?" Our answer to this question makes all the difference. If we believe, we, like the formerly blind man in John 9, will fall in worship to Him every day, surrendering our will and our desires and fully trusting Him to provide for and take care of us. Will you surrender to Him?

Moving Toward Action

Is there an area of your life that you have struggled to trust God with fully? Maybe it is a relationship, your finances, the future, or something else. Bring that before God today. Surrender it to Him in worship, declaring that you trust Him to take care of you.

John 9:35-41

35 When Jesus heard what had happened, he found the man and asked, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”

36 The man answered, “Who is he, sir? I want to believe in him.”

37 “You have seen him,” Jesus said, “and he is speaking to you!”

38 “Yes, Lord, I believe!” the man said. And he worshiped Jesus.

39 Then Jesus told him, “I entered this world to render judgment—to give sight to the blind and to show those who think they see that they are blind.”

40 Some Pharisees who were standing nearby heard him and asked, “Are you saying we’re blind?”

41 “If you were blind, you wouldn’t be guilty,” Jesus replied. “But you remain guilty because you claim you can see.
