For through Him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can't see— such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through Him and for Him. Colossians 1:16
God is the ultimate Creator. According to Colossians 1:16, He created everything in heaven and on earth. He created what we can see and what we cannot see, including angels. The study of angels is fascinating, as well as puzzling because we cannot see them with our eyes. Even though we cannot see them, we can learn a lot about them from Scripture, including the fact that God created angels.
God, the God of Angel Armies, is the creator of angels. They were created by Him and for Him with a very specific purpose which we will discover throughout the rest of the week. Because angels are created, they are not to be worshiped. The apostle John learned this lesson the hard way in Revelation 22.
In Revelation 22, through a vision, an angel revealed to John that Jesus was coming soon and that everything in the world that has been destroyed by sin will be restored and made right. When John heard this, he started to worship the angel. As soon as this happened, the angel stopped him. This angel assured him that he was simply God's messenger, just like John, and commanded John to worship only God.
If God is creator, it stands to reason that He is the only One to be worshiped. It also stands to reason that followers of God would live lives that glorify Him. Glorifying God means living in a way that honors Him and points others to Him, showing others His glory, honor, and power. Like this angel speaking with John, let's be followers of God whose lives point others to worship God rather than ourselves.
Take time today to remember that God created everything, including the things we see and the things we do not see. Everything was created for the purpose of glorifying Him. Spend time in prayer today, praising God for being such a purposeful Creator, the God of Angel Armies, who created even angels to serve and glorify Him.
Read Revelation 22:1-9 (NLT)
Then the angel showed me a river with the water of life, clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb. It flowed down the center of the main street. On each side of the river grew a tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, with a fresh crop each month. The leaves were used for medicine to heal the nations.
No longer will there be a curse upon anything. For the throne of God and of the Lamb will be there, and his servants will worship him. And they will see his face, and his name will be written on their foreheads. And there will be no night there—no need for lamps or sun—for the Lord God will shine on them. And they will reign forever and ever.
Then the angel said to me, “Everything you have heard and seen is trustworthy and true. The Lord God, who inspires his prophets, has sent his angel to tell his servants what will happen soon.”
“Look, I am coming soon! Blessed are those who obey the words of prophecy written in this book.”
I, John, am the one who heard and saw all these things. And when I heard and saw them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed them to me. But he said, “No, don’t worship me. I am a servant of God, just like you and your brothers the prophets, as well as all who obey what is written in this book. Worship only God!”
