Then the angel of the Lord came again and touched him and said, “Get up and eat some more, or the journey ahead will be too much for you.” So he got up and ate and drank, and the food gave him enough strength to travel forty days and forty nights to Mount Sinai, the mountain of God. 1 Kings 19:7-8
During His ministry, Jesus taught that we get to pray to God as our Heavenly Father. Indeed, God is our Heavenly Father, and we are His children. He cares deeply for us. As our loving Heavenly Father, we can have confidence that He will always take care of us, including during our times of distress and fear. Because He is our Heavenly Father who loves and cares for us, we can be confident that He will always provide for us.
We find Elijah in 1 Kings 19 in desperate need of the reminder that God was always taking care of him. The queen of the Northern Kingdom of Israel, Jezebel, had issued a threat against his life, and he was terrified. He fled to the wilderness and "prayed that he might die" (verse 4). He prayed to God, "I have had enough, Lord… take my life" (verse 4). This must have been one of the lowest moments in Elijah's life. In this desperate moment, God met Elijah. "As he was sleeping, an angel of the Lord touched him and said, ‘Get up and eat!’” (verse 5). Now, Elijah was in the wilderness without many options for food to eat, but God provided for him. Elijah "looked around and there beside his head was some bread baked on hot stones and a jar of water" (verse 6). In the midst of Elijah's lowest moments, God was providing him with exactly what he needed: food and water. The food that God provided for Elijah "gave him enough strength to travel forty days and forty nights to Mount Sinai, the mountain of God" (verse 8). Elijah called out to God in his desperation, and God met and provided him with what he needed: food and water to keep going and make his journey to Mount Sinai.
What a beautiful picture this story of God's provision for Elijah is. God met him in his desperation and depression and provided him with food and water to sustain him. Still today, God provides exactly what we need. He meets us in our lowest moments and cares for us. His provision may not always look how we expect it to, but He will always provide what we need.
Take a few moments to pray today. Present your worries and concerns to God today. Remember, He is your loving Heavenly Father who cares for you. You can always be sure that God will provide you with exactly what you need, even if what you need is different than you expect. You can always trust in His provision for you.
1 Kings 19:5-9
5 Then he lay down and slept under the broom tree. But as he was sleeping, an angel touched him and told him, “Get up and eat!” 6 He looked around and there beside his head was some bread baked on hot stones and a jar of water! So he ate and drank and lay down again.
7 Then the angel of the Lord came again and touched him and said, “Get up and eat some more, or the journey ahead will be too much for you.”
8 So he got up and ate and drank, and the food gave him enough strength to travel forty days and forty nights to Mount Sinai, the mountain of God. 9 There he came to a cave, where he spent the night.
But the Lord said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
