Level Up: Week 3 - Thursday

Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them. Ephesians 4:29

Did you know that research shows that for every negative comment made, three positive comments are necessary in order to balance out the negative comment? Our words are powerful, and whether we realize it or not, our words leave people built up and encouraged or torn down and discouraged. As followers of Christ, our calling is to use our words to leave people feeling equipped and encouraged.

Paul teaches readers to speak positive words in Ephesians 4. In this chapter, he writes, "Don't use foul or abusive language" (verse 29). Immediately, Paul commands readers not to use offensive, hurtful language. Any such language should be out of our vocabulary. This kind of language is destructive. It points us, and others, away from Christ, not towards Him. Paul continues His teaching, “Let everything you say be good and helpful” (verse 29). Notice the word “everything” in this passage of Scripture. This word is all-encompassing. Everything we say is to be good and helpful, according to Ephesians 4:29. Why? Paul answers this question as he concludes verse 29, “So that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.” The purpose of speaking good and helpful words is to provide encouragement for everyone who hears them. When we speak, we can speak with the purpose of encouraging the people around us. Speaking with this purpose in mind changes everything.

It is time for us to be purposeful and intentional with the words we speak. Let’s speak with the purpose of encouraging all of the people around us in mind. May each one of us commit to speaking every word with purpose and using our words to encourage everyone we encounter.

Moving Toward Action

Memorize Ephesians 4:29. Let this verse remind you that you have the opportunity to build people up with the words you say or tear them down. Commit to being someone who builds those around you up with your words. Your encouraging words may have a greater impact than you could ever realize.

Going Deeper

 Ephesians 4:25-32

25 So stop telling lies. Let us tell our neighbors the truth, for we are all parts of the same body. 26 And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.” Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 for anger gives a foothold to the devil.

28 If you are a thief, quit stealing. Instead, use your hands for good hard work, and then give generously to others in need. 29 Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.

30 And do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he has identified you as his own, guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption.

31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. 32 Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.
