But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. Psalm 1:2
One of the greatest influences of our thoughts and mindsets is what we allow to consume our minds. The people we listen to, the music and podcasts that we consume, and the movies and television that we watch all impact our minds. As a result, if we want to have a mindset that honors God and leads us to words and actions that point people to Christ, we have to consume our minds with the things of God and His kingdom.
One of the ways that we can set our minds on the Kingdom of God is by focusing on Scripture. When we set our minds on God’s word, we are stronger, more faithful followers of Christ. The author of Psalm 1 says it this way, “Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night” (verses 1-2) Those who choose to delight in and meditate in God’s word instead of the things of this world experience great joy. For these people, studying Scripture is a delight and not a duty. They are always thinking about God’s word and reflecting on it. They know God’s word so fully and deeply that His word impacts everything. As a result, they experience profound joy. Even more, the Psalmist continues, “They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do” (verse 3). When we root ourselves in God’s word, we flourish. We produce good fruit. We are strong and remain steadfast and firm in our faith. The fruit we produce is evidence of our time (or lack of time) talking to God and diving into His word.
I do not know about you, but I want to be like the people described in Psalm 1. I want to have such a delight in God’s word that I cannot help but constantly think about it and dwell on it. I want God’s word to change me from the inside out so that, like a growing, prosperous tree, I produce fruit that points straight to my Savior. This will not come naturally. We have to be dedicated to being rooted in God’s word so that we can be fruitful and faithful followers of Christ. May each one of us commit to reading and reflecting on God’s word, and may our lives reflect Him as a result.

Psalm 1:1-6
1 Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. 2 But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. 3 They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.
4 But not the wicked! They are like worthless chaff, scattered by the wind. 5 They will be condemned at the time of judgment. Sinners will have no place among the godly. 6 For the Lord watches over the path of the godly, but the path of the wicked leads to destruction.
