I Quit: Week 3 - Saturday

Give your burdens to the Lord, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall. Psalm 55:22

We have been talking all week about Scripture's call not to worry but to trust God with the unknowns and the future instead. After all, everything boils down to trust. Either we trust God with the future and the unknown, or we don't. There is no middle ground. Choosing to trust God is the far better choice to make. After all, He is entirely trustworthy.

King David issues a call for his readers to fully place their trust in God in Psalm 55. In this Psalm, David expressed fear because his enemies were threatening him. He said to God, “My enemies shout at me, making loud and wicked threats… My heart pounds in my chest. The terror of death assaults me. Fear and trembling overwhelm me, and I can’t stop shaking” (verses 4-5). His level of fear, it appears, was at an all-time high. After expressing his fear and distress, David shifted his conversation from his enemies and his fear onto God. He said, “I will call on God, and the Lord will rescue me. Morning, noon, and night I cry out in my distress, and the Lord hears my voice” (verses 16-17). David knew that God would rescue him from his enemies because God had continually taken care of him and rescued him throughout his life. This brought a sense of peace and confidence, which can be seen in another shift that David makes in this Psalm. Suddenly, he writes to readers, "Give your burdens to the Lord, and He will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall" (verse 22). David knew God would rescue him, and he wanted his readers to also trust in God's care and provision for them because He takes care of all of His people, including you.

You have a choice to make today, friend; you can either focus on all of your worries and concerns or God. You can choose to trust Him or choose to let your worries consume you. I urge you, in light of all that God has done and how He has taken care of you throughout your life in big and small ways, time after time, to look to Him. Turn to Him, who is always in control, and trust Him to work. He is the one who holds the world in His hands. He holds you and your cares and concerns in His hand. The invitation He extends to you today is an invitation to trust Him. Will you look to Him today?

Moving Toward Action

Take a few moments to think about how God has proven Himself trustworthy in your life. Write down at least 10 different ways that God has provided and taken care of you. When you are finished, pray. Thank God for all of the ways He has proven Himself trustworthy, including the ways you wrote down and the ways you did not. Commit to trusting Him with your whole life instead of giving in to worry.

Going Deeper

Psalm 56:1-13

For the choir director: A psalm of David, regarding the time the Philistines seized him in Gath. To be sung to the tune “Dove on Distant Oaks.”

O God, have mercy on me,
    for people are hounding me.
    My foes attack me all day long.
I am constantly hounded by those who slander me,
    and many are boldly attacking me.
But when I am afraid,
    I will put my trust in you.
I praise God for what he has promised.
    I trust in God, so why should I be afraid?
    What can mere mortals do to me?

They are always twisting what I say;
    they spend their days plotting to harm me.
They come together to spy on me—
    watching my every step, eager to kill me.
Don’t let them get away with their wickedness;
    in your anger, O God, bring them down.

You keep track of all my sorrows.[b]
    You have collected all my tears in your bottle.
    You have recorded each one in your book.

My enemies will retreat when I call to you for help.
    This I know: God is on my side!
10 I praise God for what he has promised;
    yes, I praise the Lord for what he has promised.
11 I trust in God, so why should I be afraid?
    What can mere mortals do to me?

12 I will fulfill my vows to you, O God,
    and will offer a sacrifice of thanks for your help.
13 For you have rescued me from death;
    you have kept my feet from slipping.
So now I can walk in your presence, O God,
    in your life-giving light.
