I Doubt It: Week 2 - Thursday

How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered! Psalm 139:17

For the first 5 days of creation, which are recounted in Genesis 1, God declared everything that He had created “good.” On the sixth day of creation, God created human beings, and there was something different than the rest of creation. At the creation of humanity, God declared His creation to be “very good” (verse 31). From the moment human beings were created, it is clear that there is something unique about people. Only human beings were created to have a personal relationship with God. We get to spend our lives seeking to know Him and to make Him known.

King David, the second king of Israel and the author of many Psalms, understood that God desires personal relationships with people and that He cares for them. He wrote about these truths in Psalm 139. In this passage of Scripture, he recounted God’s deep knowledge of him and care for him. David knew that God’s care for him was so deep that He “knew everything about [him]” (verse 1). David also understood that God had created him carefully and purposefully rather than being uninvolved and uncaring. He wrote, “You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book…How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered!” (verses 16-17). David had a deep understanding that God was intimately involved in his life because he loved and cared for him. As a result, He concluded this Psalm saying, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life” (verses 23-24). David took comfort in the truth that God wanted to have a relationship with him, and that He knew him deeply, so he invited God to search his heart and know him, knowing that only God leads us on the path toward life.

What was true for David is true for you. God knows you intimately. He knows every single thing about you. His thoughts about you cannot even be counted! He created you to know Him and to have a personal relationship with Him. Will you, like David, take a step in the direction toward Him, inviting Him to search you and know you? Will you seek to know Him, too? He wants to have a personal relationship with you. No other part of creation can say that!

Moving Toward Action

How do you personally connect with your Heavenly Father? Is it through being outside in His creation, worshiping Him through music, getting alone for a few minutes of quiet and solitude so you can pray and reflect on what He might be saying to you, or something else? Whatever it looks like for you, take time to be with your Heavenly Father, who delights in having a personal relationship with you!

Going Deeper

Psalm 139:1-24

1 O Lord, you have examined my heart
    and know everything about me.
2 You know when I sit down or stand up.
    You know my thoughts even when I’m far away.
3 You see me when I travel
    and when I rest at home.
    You know everything I do.
4 You know what I am going to say
    even before I say it, Lord.
5 You go before me and follow me.
    You place your hand of blessing on my head.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
    too great for me to understand!

7 I can never escape from your Spirit!
    I can never get away from your presence!
8 If I go up to heaven, you are there;
    if I go down to the grave, you are there.
9 If I ride the wings of the morning,
    if I dwell by the farthest oceans,
10 even there your hand will guide me,
    and your strength will support me.
11 I could ask the darkness to hide me
    and the light around me to become night—
12     but even in darkness I cannot hide from you.
To you the night shines as bright as day.
    Darkness and light are the same to you.

13 You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body
    and knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex!
    Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.
15 You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion,
    as I was woven together in the dark of the womb.
16 You saw me before I was born.
    Every day of my life was recorded in your book.
Every moment was laid out
    before a single day had passed.

17 How precious are your thoughts about me, O God.
    They cannot be numbered!
18 I can’t even count them;
    they outnumber the grains of sand!
And when I wake up,
    you are still with me!

19 O God, if only you would destroy the wicked!
    Get out of my life, you murderers!
20 They blaspheme you;
    your enemies misuse your name.
21 O Lord, shouldn’t I hate those who hate you?
    Shouldn’t I despise those who oppose you?
22 Yes, I hate them with total hatred,
    for your enemies are my enemies.

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart;
    test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 Point out anything in me that offends you,
    and lead me along the path of everlasting life.
