But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. Psalm 1:2
In our Bible study yesterday, we were reminded of the importance of communicating with God. Specifically, we talked about the importance of communicating with God through prayer. Prayer is one of the most important ways that we can communicate with God. Not only do we have the gift of talking to God through prayer, but we also have the gift of hearing from God through Scripture, God's word to us.
The author of Psalm 1 explains the importance of regularly spending time in God’s word. He writes, “Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night” (verses 1-2). Those who spend time reading, delighting, and meditating on the Bible experience joy. The author of Psalm 1 explains why. He writes, "They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do" (verse 3). Those who spend time in Scripture reading God's word experience the fruit that comes from being planted and rooted in God's word. They grow. They prosper. They are not knocked down by the storms of life that arise because they are firmly rooted and secure in God's word. Because of this, those who consistently read their Bibles have a deep-rooted joy that cannot be taken from them.
We all understand that reading Scripture is important, even critical. The question is, will we read it? Will we pick it up and meditate on it, soaking in God's word? Even more, will reading Scripture become a delight instead of something that feels like a duty? The decision to firmly plant ourselves in the word of God will have a profound impact. Will you commit to reading, meditating on, and delighting in God's word today?
One of the ways we can focus on and study Scripture is through Scripture memory. After reading through the verses in the Going Deeper section below, pick one of the verses from that passage of Scripture to memorize. As you go throughout your day, set your mind and heart on God's word by reflecting on the Scripture you memorized.
Psalm 1:1-6
1 Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. 2 But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. 3 They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.
4 But not the wicked! They are like worthless chaff, scattered by the wind. 5 They will be condemned at the time of judgment. Sinners will have no place among the godly. 6 For the Lord watches over the path of the godly, but the path of the wicked leads to destruction.
