We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. 2 Corinthians 10:5a
If we want to form habits that honor God and speak words that point others to Christ and His Kingdom, we not only have to pay attention to our words and actions but also the lies we hear around us. You see, if we are not careful, we can find ourselves being deceived by the enemy, who is doing everything possible to keep us from following Christ. We can begin to believe the lies of the enemy instead of the truth of Scripture. We must make every effort to distinguish lies from the truth and trust God and His word over the lies of the enemy.
The apostle Paul encouraged Christ followers to be aware of the enemy and his lies in the book of 2nd Corinthians. In this passage of Scripture, he wrote about how he sought to fight against false teachings, arguments, and lies that were being spread. He wrote, "We use God's mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments" (verse 4). Because we are followers of Christ, we are called to fight against the lies of the enemy and spread the truth of God to everyone around us. Paul continued his teaching, saying, "We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God” (verse 5). As Christ followers, we must set aside any lie and false teaching, and there are many being spread throughout this world, and only look to the truth of God and His word.
What lies of the enemy have you been believing? Maybe you have been believing the lie that God's love is conditional and that you have to work to earn it. Perhaps you have been believing the lie that some sins cannot be forgiven, even when we turn to God for forgiveness. Maybe you have been believing the lie that you can get away with a particular sin. I urge you, friend, to let go of that lie today and exchange it for truth from God's word.
Write down the lies of the enemy that you have believed. After writing these lies down, look to Scripture. Find verses that speak against the lies of the enemy that you have been believing. Next to each lie, write down the passage of Scripture that speaks against the lie you have held on to. Commit to focus on the truth of God and His word instead of the lies of the enemy today.
2 Corinthians 10:1-5a
1Now I, Paul, appeal to you with the gentleness and kindness of Christ—though I realize you think I am timid in person and bold only when I write from far away. 2 Well, I am begging you now so that when I come I won’t have to be bold with those who think we act from human motives.
3 We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do. 4 We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. 5 We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God.
