What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us? Romans 8:31
One of the sweetest things to observe is a parent comforting a young child. Regardless of what happens, a good parent has the ability to scoop up that child and say, “I’m here. It is okay.” What is the message that parents convey when they say these words? They are letting them know that they are with them, and because of that, they will always protect and care for them. This is the same with the love of God. When we come to Him in heartache, pain, fear, or anything else, He offers His presence. This means that God will be with us through everything we face, and nothing can be against us when God is for us.
As Paul writes about the incredible, outstanding love of God in Romans 8, his writing leads to a crescendo where he says, “What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us?” (verse 31). This was certainly a rhetorical question, and the implied answer is “nothing.” According to this verse, there is not one thing on earth that can be against us. After all, God is for us and on our side. What is the result of this knowledge? Confidence. We can press forward every day knowing that God is for us, so nothing is against us. This means that whatever He calls us to do, whatever step we take, whatever we face in life, we can have the confidence that nothing is against us, not even death.
Jesus Himself spoke of the confidence in God’s plan and protection in John 10. Talking about His followers, He explained, “I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them away from Me, for My Father has given them to Me, and He is more powerful than anyone else. No one can snatch them from the Father’s hand” (verses 28-29). Nothing can come against us because God is all-powerful. He will never let you go, and no one or thing can grab you from His hand.
Maybe today, you need the reminder to live in confidence. God is for you. Because God is for you, can anything be against you? The answer is a resounding “no!” Walk confidently today as you take each step, remembering that you have a God who is for you.
What feels like it is against you today? List all of these things out. After listing them out, take them to God. Acknowledge that it feels like all of the things you listed are against you, but also acknowledge that you know the truth of Scripture that God is for you, and as a result, nothing can come against you.
Read John 10:22-30(NLT)
Then came the Festival of Dedication at Jerusalem. It was winter, and Jesus was in the temple courts walking in Solomon’s Colonnade. The Jews who were there gathered around him, saying, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.”
Jesus answered, “I did tell you, but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify about me, but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.”
