Every Last Drop: Week 2 - Friday

He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name. Psalm 23:3

This week, we are talking about loving God with all of our strength. For some, you might feel very strong today, whether that is physically, emotionally, or spiritually. For others, you do not feel strong today. You feel weary. If that is you today, I have good news. When you feel weary, you can turn to God. He will give you the strength you need to walk through whatever you are facing. He will refresh your spirit and give you strength.

King David understood that God was His source of strength, and he wrote about it in Psalm 23. He wrote this passage of Scripture with the perspective of a shepherd. Now, it is important to remember that he knew something about being a shepherd because before he became a king, he was a shepherd boy living a simple life, taking care of sheep. He wrote in Psalm 23, “The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need” (verse 1). In other words, because David had God as his shepherd, He needed nothing. God was all he needed. Next, he wrote about the strength and rest that God, his shepherd, gave him. He wrote, “He lets me rest in green meadows; He leads me beside peaceful streams” (verse 2). Now, Israel, where David lived and shepherded, is very hot. You cannot find “green meadows” or “peaceful streams” everywhere. You have to know where to look. You have to search. David explained in Psalm 23 that God, his shepherd, knew right where to lead him to find these meadows and streams. What is the result of finding those meadows and streams? Rest that leads to strength. That is why David continued writing, “He renews my strength” (verse 3). After all, when we are rested and refreshed, we are automatically strengthened. David experienced rest and renewed strength when he looked to God as His shepherd and chose to be led by Him.

My friend, what was available to David is available to you today. You see, centuries later, a different King, the true King, Jesus, came to earth, and in John 10 He said these words: “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd sacrifices his life for the sheep” (verse 11). And Jesus did just that. He laid down His life for every single person so that if they place their faith in Him, they can find life, rest, and strength in Him.

You have a Good Shepherd, my friend. Will you let Him lead you? Will you trust in Him and find rest in Him as He leads and guides you? He alone can bring you life and strength.

Going Deeper

Psalm 23:1-6

The Lord is my shepherd;
    I have all that I need.
He lets me rest in green meadows;
    he leads me beside peaceful streams.
    He renews my strength.
He guides me along right paths,
    bringing honor to his name.
Even when I walk
    through the darkest valley,
I will not be afraid,
    for you are close beside me.
Your rod and your staff
    protect and comfort me.
You prepare a feast for me
    in the presence of my enemies.
You honor me by anointing my head with oil.
    My cup overflows with blessings.
Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me
    all the days of my life,
and I will live in the house of the Lord
    forever.
