Every Last Drop: Week 1 - Friday

The Lord is good and does what is right; he shows the proper path to those who go astray.  He leads the humble in doing right, teaching them his way. Psalm 25:8-9

We have all heard the saying, “follow your heart.” This saying may sound nice, but it is bad advice. After all, our Bible study time together this week has made it clear that our hearts can deceive us. Following our hearts can lead us further and further from God rather than closer to Him. If we want to love God with all of our hearts and souls, we have to stop following our hearts and follow His guidance instead.

David set a remarkable example, imperfect though it was, of someone who let God lead him. He wrote about his commitment to God’s leadership in Psalm 25. He began this Psalm, which He wrote to the Lord, saying, “O Lord, I give my life to You. I trust in You, my God” (verses 1-2). This trust in God impacted everything else he wrote in this Psalm. Because he knew God is trustworthy, David could confidently follow Him. As he wrote this Psalm, he made a request to God: “Show me the right path, O Lord; point out the road for me to follow. Lead me by Your truth and teach me, for you are the God who saves me” (verses 4-5). This was a wise request to God, made with confidence that God was the right One to follow. Several verses later, David continued writing, “The Lord is good and does what is right; He shows the proper path to those who go astray. He leads the humble in doing right, teaching them His way” (verses 8-9). David was so confident in God’s goodness that he knew he could trust God to lead him along the right path. The invitation to follow God’s leading was not just for David. In the New Testament, when Jesus called the first disciples, He offered this simple invitation: “Follow me.” His disciples were invited to follow Jesus’ leading, the Son of God, and it was the journey of a lifetime. As a result of accepting that invitation, the disciples’ lives were changed forever.

The truth is, we all follow someone or something. If we do not follow God, our hearts will lead us to follow a person, a false teaching, or something else that is of this world that we think can bring us joy and satisfaction. These things will always lead us on paths we never wanted to go. God, on the other hand, will never leave us disappointed.

My friend, God’s guidance is available to you today. The question is, will you accept His invitation to follow His leading? Will you let Him lead you, or will you follow your heart instead? I urge you, friend, to turn to Him and let Him lead. If you do, you will never be disappointed.

Moving Toward Action

In what area of your life do you need to invite God to guide you? Is it in a relationship, your parenting, your work, decision-making, or something else? Your challenge today is to invite God to guide you. Commit to loving God with your whole heart by letting Him lead rather than following your heart and trying to take the reins of your life. Remember, there is no better guide than Him!

Prayer Prompt: Use this prompt to guide you as you pray.

Going Deeper

Psalm 25:1-22

O Lord, I give my life to you.
I trust in you, my God!
Do not let me be disgraced,
or let my enemies rejoice in my defeat.
No one who trusts in you will ever be disgraced,
but disgrace comes to those who try to deceive others.

Show me the right path, O Lord;
point out the road for me to follow.
Lead me by your truth and teach me,
for you are the God who saves me.
All day long I put my hope in you.
Remember, O Lord, your compassion and unfailing love,
which you have shown from long ages past.
Do not remember the rebellious sins of my youth.
Remember me in the light of your unfailing love,
for you are merciful, O Lord.

The Lord is good and does what is right;
he shows the proper path to those who go astray.
He leads the humble in doing right,
    teaching them his way.
10 The Lord leads with unfailing love and faithfulness
all who keep his covenant and obey his demands.

11 For the honor of your name, O Lord,
    forgive my many, many sins.
12 Who are those who fear the Lord?
He will show them the path they should choose.
13 They will live in prosperity,
and their children will inherit the land.
14 The Lord is a friend to those who fear him.
    He teaches them his covenant.
15 My eyes are always on the Lord,
for he rescues me from the traps of my enemies.

16 Turn to me and have mercy,
for I am alone and in deep distress.
17 My problems go from bad to worse.
Oh, save me from them all!
18 Feel my pain and see my trouble.
    Forgive all my sins.
19 See how many enemies I have
and how viciously they hate me!
20 Protect me! Rescue my life from them!
Do not let me be disgraced, for in you I take refuge.
21 May integrity and honesty protect me,
for I put my hope in you.

22 O God, ransom Israel
    from all its troubles.
