All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer.
Think back to when you gave your life to Christ and got baptized. Next, remember when someone you know gave their life to Christ and got baptized. These are life-changing moments that become defining markers in our lives. The natural next question after these moments is, “What’s next?” After all, committing our lives to Christ changes the course of our lives, so of course, we want to know how to live for Him daily. But, of course, we are not left alone in this question. We find in Acts 2 an example of how we are to live once we have committed our lives to Christ.
After about 3,000 believers gave their lives to Christ, they took the next steps in their faith, Acts 2 tells us. “All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s supper), and to prayer” (verse 42). They stayed devoted to learning. The apostles taught them about Jesus and His teachings. They also met together and fellowshipped, sharing meals together. This gathering must have been a time of encouraging each other in their faith. They also prayed. All of these steps are essential to growing in faith.
The believers in the early church set an incredible example for us of how we are to live as followers of Christ. We are to be devoted to good teaching about God and His word, prayer, and meeting together with followers of Christ. As we do these things, we will find what the early church undoubtedly found; we will grow. Friends, let’s follow this example. May it be said of us that we, too, were devoted to faithful teaching about God and His word, prayer, and the body of Christ.
Memorize Acts 2:24. You may even want to stick it on a notecard and put it where you can see it often. Let this Scripture remind you of the devoted lives that Christ calls us to live. If we embrace each of these areas, we will grow and become more and more like Christ.
Acts 2:42-47 (NLT)
"All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer.
43 A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. 44 And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. 45 They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. 46 They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity— 47 all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved."
