“Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends. Revelation 3:20
Scripture makes it clear that God loves His people too much not to discipline us and to call out our sin, including the sin of apathy, or lukewarmness, when it comes to the race of faith that God has called us to run. Instead of letting us get away with our sin, He calls out our sin and tells us to repent, or turn away from our sin. And the good news is, He is ready and waiting for us to turn away from our sin and turn back to Him. There is always forgiveness and restoration on the other side of repentance.
In our Bible study yesterday, we read a warning from Jesus in Revelation to the church in Laodicea. This church had given in to the sin of apathy, and they were living lukewarm lives instead of running the race of faith that He had called them (and all of His followers) to run. After calling them out for being lukewarm, Jesus said, “Be diligent and turn from your indifference” (verse 19). This call was crystal clear: to turn away from their apathy and get off the sidelines. After giving this call, Jesus gave them these encouraging words: “Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends” (verse 20). What remarkable words from Jesus! Yes, the church in Laodicea had been apathetic. They had been lukewarm. They had stepped off course and moved toward the sidelines. They were not without hope, however. If they walked away from their apathy, there was hope for restoration. Jesus’ message to the church of Laodicea continued, “Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends” (verse 20). Jesus was ready and waiting for them to come out of apathy and turn back to Him. After all, sharing a meal as friends is the ultimate picture of repentance and restoration. What a remarkable promise He made to them!
My friend, we serve a God of restoration. When we turn back to Him, He is waiting and ready to restore us. Maybe there is an area of your life where you have been lukewarm. Maybe you have repented, but you wonder whether you can still run the race of faith God has called you to, or whether you have been disqualified. Find hope in the words of Jesus from Revelation 3. When we turn back to Him, He is ready and waiting for us.
Yesterday in our Bible study, you were encouraged to confess any areas of your life where you have been lukewarm or apathetic in your faith. Today, your call is to take a step of faith to begin running the race of faith God has called you to, whether that is signing up to serve at Sagebrush, inviting someone to church with you this weekend, or taking an important step toward growth in your relationship with Christ.

“God, You are a God of forgiveness, thank You for…”
Revelation 3:17-22
17 You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. 18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.
19 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent. 20 Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.
21 To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne. 22 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”
