Crash and Learn: Week 4 - Thursday

Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others. 1st Timothy 6:18

For many in the world today, their purpose is to make as much as they can and spend everything that they are able to save all on themselves. This is a limited view of our money, however. There is a better way of living than hoarding all of our money for ourselves, and that is practicing generosity toward the people around us. Generosity toward others is a way to make a remarkable impact with the one life each one of us is given.

Paul calls followers of Christ to practice generosity toward others in 1st Timothy 6. In this passage of Scripture, He called Timothy to teach those who are wealthy “to use their money to do good” (verse 18). Then, he explained how to use our money to do good. He wrote, “They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always ready to share with others” (verse 18). Instead of spending our money on ourselves, Paul calls us to be “generous to those in need” and to “always” be “ready to share with others.” This is how to steward our money well.

After encouraging us to be generous toward others in need, Paul explains why in 1st Timothy 6. He wrote, “By doing this, they will be storing up treasure as a good foundation for the future so that they may experience true life” (verse 19). The “true life” that Paul describes in this passage of Scripture is eternal life with Christ one day. When we live for Him and serve others rather than storing up treasures here on earth, we will be living for and storing up treasures for eternity, which is a much better way to live.

We have a choice, friends. We can either store up earthly treasures and keep all of our finances for ourselves, or we can be radically generous toward those around us. Let’s be known for our generosity. After all, nothing on this earth can last forever.

Going Deeper

1st Timothy 6:18-21

18 Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others. 19 By doing this they will be storing up their treasure as a good foundation for the future so that they may experience true life.

20 Timothy, guard what God has entrusted to you. Avoid godless, foolish discussions with those who oppose you with their so-called knowledge. 21 Some people have wandered from the faith by following such foolishness.

May God’s grace be with you all.
