The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it. The world and all its people belong to him. Psalm 24:1
We walk through life claiming ownership of many things. We claim that our homes, vehicles, possessions, and our time all belong to us. The truth is, however, that if we operate under this mindset, we are only fooling ourselves. Nothing in this world truly belongs to us. No, they belong to God. God is the creator, sustainer, and owner of everything. When we have this perspective, we begin to realize that instead of being owners of our lives and our possessions, we are actually stewards. We are responsible for stewarding our lives well to make Christ known all around us, making the very most of the lives we have been given.
Throughout Scripture, we are reminded that everything belongs to God. Indeed, even our very lives belong to Him, not us. David explained this truth in Psalm 24, where he wrote, “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it. The world and all its people belong to him” (verse 1). In other words, everything belongs to God. He created every person, this earth, and every single thing on this planet. Next, David explained why everything belongs to God, saying, “For He laid the earth’s foundation on the seas and built it on the ocean depths” (verse 2). Why does everything belong to God? Everything belongs to God because He created it. As the creator of the world and all that is in it, everything belongs to Him.
Another place in Scripture where we are reminded that God is the owner of this world and everything in it is James 1. James writes in this passage of Scripture, “Don’t be misled, my dear brothers and sisters. Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens” (verse 16). Make no mistake, every single good thing in our lives is a gift from God. We are simply the stewards of all of His gifts. I do not know about you, but when someone lends me something, I take extra care as I use it, feeling particularly responsible to take good care of something that belongs to someone else.
When it comes to your life and everything in it, do you view it as your own or God’s? Maybe today we need a perspective shift. Perhaps we need the reminder that everything belongs to God, including our lives and the gifts God has given us. May we be good stewards of all that He has given us, which is everything!
For the next few minutes, spend time in prayer. First, take time to recognize that everything in your life belongs to God. Recognize that He is the one who owns the world and everything in it. Next, thank Him. Thank Him for every single gift He has given you. After all, everything good in your life is a gift. Finally, ask Him to help you to steward all of His good gifts well.
“God, I know everything belongs to you, including the time you have given me on earth, I thank You for…”
Psalm 24:1-10
1 The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it. The world and all its people belong to him. 2 For he laid the earth’s foundation on the seas and built it on the ocean depths.
3 Who may climb the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place? 4 Only those whose hands and hearts are pure, who do not worship idols and never tell lies. 5 They will receive the Lord’s blessing and have a right relationship with God their savior. 6 Such people may seek you and worship in your presence, O God of Jacob. 7 Open up, ancient gates! Open up, ancient doors, and let the King of glory enter. 8 Who is the King of glory? The Lord, strong and mighty; the Lord, invincible in battle. 9 Open up, ancient gates! Open up, ancient doors, and let the King of glory enter. 10 Who is the King of glory? The Lord of Heaven’s Armies— he is the King of glory. Interlude
