Don't let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. There is more than enough room in my Father's home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? John 14:1-2
There is a universal longing for home in all of us, I believe. We are all looking and searching for a place to belong. I often felt this longing for home in college. You see, although I lived in a dorm that took care of all of my needs, none of my dorms were ever home. I remember longing for permanence and a place to stay rooted and claim as my own home. This longing for home, I am convinced, is from the Lord. You see, Scripture teaches that there is a longing in all of us for our eternal home, Heaven. We are going to talk about this truth today and talk about the hope we have that our eternal home is waiting for us if we have placed our faith in Christ.
We have been studying about the fact that, if we are following Him, God has made us His children (1 John 3:1), and the implications of being His children, the children of royalty. Today, we are going to look back at a section of Scripture that John wrote earlier in the book of John, and discover another implication: we have a forever home waiting for us. In John 14:1-2, John writes, "Don't let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God. Trust also in me. There is more than enough room in my Father's home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you?" In saying this, Jesus taught His disciples, and us, that we have an eternal home to look forward to. When we arrive, all of those desires and longings for home that we currently have will be met, and we will know that we have finally found our true home, where we are at peace and where we belong.
Can you relate to this desire to feel at home? Maybe you are wondering if this desire will ever be met. My friend, Scripture teaches that you and I, indeed, have a home if we have placed our faith in Him. He is taking care of us and has a home for us that will exceed anything we could hope for or expect because we will be with Him forever.
Spend time today out in nature. Go on a walk. As you walk, listen to John 14:1-14 being read to you on your Bible app, and reflect on it. Remember that, while this Earth is not your home, you have a home in Heaven waiting for you if you place your faith in Him.
“Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am. And you know the way to where I am going.”
“No, we don’t know, Lord,” Thomas said. “We have no idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. If you had really known me, you would know who my Father is. From now on, you do know him and have seen him!”
Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.”
Jesus replied, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and yet you still don’t know who I am? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father! So why are you asking me to show him to you? Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words I speak are not my own, but my Father who lives in me does his work through me. Just believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Or at least believe because of the work you have seen me do.
“I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father. You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father. Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it!
