If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny who he is. 2nd Timothy 2:13
This week in our series, BIG GOD, little me, we are talking about one of the most important attributes of God: His faithfulness. Shining a light on God and His never-ending faithfulness also shines a light on our lack of faithfulness. Because we are imperfect sinners, we will, at times, mess up. Our faith will waver. Unlike us, however, God will always remain faithful, even when our own faith waivers.
Paul reminds us that God’s faithfulness is not contingent on our own faithfulness in 2nd Timothy 2. In this passage of Scripture, He writes about His willingness to serve God and endure anything to spread the hope of Christ with the world, even while he was chained in prison. He wrote, “Because I preach this Good News, I am suffering and have been chained like a criminal. But the word of God cannot be chained” (verse 9). Paul knew that God’s word could not be stopped even when he was suffering in prison. Paul continued writing, “So I am willing to endure anything if it will bring salvation… to those God has chosen” (verse 10). Paul could endure suffering and imprisonment for making Christ known because He knew God is faithful. That’s why He wrote, “If we die with Him, we will also live with Him. If we endure hardship, we will reign with Him. If we deny Him, He will deny us. If we are unfaithful, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny who He is" (verses 11-13). Paul knew that any suffering on earth for spreading the hope of Christ was worth it because He believed in God's faithfulness. Even when we waver in our faith, God does not. He remains faithful, forever.
My friend, we may waiver in our faith, but God does not. When we face hardship and difficulties, we can look to Him, reminding ourselves that "the word of God cannot be chained" and that God will always be faithful, even when we struggle or have questions. Will you look to your faithful God who never waivers, regardless of what you are facing?
Take some time to think about how God has been faithful to you throughout your life. Write down at least 10 ways that God has been faithful to you over the course of your life. When you are finished, thank God for His consistent faithfulness throughout your life. Let His faithfulness throughout your life encourage you that He will continue to be faithful in your life, even when your faith waivers.
2nd Timothy 2:1-14
1Timothy, my dear son, be strong through the grace that God gives you in Christ Jesus. 2 You have heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others.
3 Endure suffering along with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 Soldiers don’t get tied up in the affairs of civilian life, for then they cannot please the officer who enlisted them. 5 And athletes cannot win the prize unless they follow the rules. 6 And hardworking farmers should be the first to enjoy the fruit of their labor. 7 Think about what I am saying. The Lord will help you understand all these things.
8 Always remember that Jesus Christ, a descendant of King David, was raised from the dead. This is the Good News I preach. 9 And because I preach this Good News, I am suffering and have been chained like a criminal. But the word of God cannot be chained. 10 So I am willing to endure anything if it will bring salvation and eternal glory in Christ Jesus to those God has chosen.
11 This is a trustworthy saying:
If we die with him, we will also live with him. 12 If we endure hardship, we will reign with him. If we deny him, he will deny us. 13 If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny who he is.
14 Remind everyone about these things, and command them in God’s presence to stop fighting over words. Such arguments are useless, and they can ruin those who hear them.
