Big God, Little Me: Week 2 - Wednesday

God stretches the northern sky over empty space and hangs the earth on nothing. Job 26:7

One of the most incredible things to observe here on this earth is the creativity of people. With their God-given creativity, people design and build beautiful homes, write heart-wrenching songs, paint beautiful works of art, and more. Human beings are creative because we were created in the image of God. As a result, we reflect God's creativity. You see, God is the ultimate creator because He has the power to create.

Job chapter 26 gives us a remarkable description of God’s power to create. In the book of Job, Job’s faith was tested. He faced all kinds of unimaginable hardships and difficulties, and through it all, he did not denounce God even amidst his heartbreaking trials. Even Job’s friends during this time were discouraging and gave him bad advice as he walked through his suffering. In response to one of these friends’ unhelpful speeches, Job described God’s power. Specifically, His power in creation. He said, “God stretches the northern sky over empty space and hangs the earth on nothing" (verse 7). Throughout this chapter, Job explained God’s control over the weather, the moon and sun, sea creatures, and more. God's power, Job understood, is visible everywhere in creation—everything in creation points to Him and His power. Toward the end of his speech, Job wrote, “These are just the beginning of all that He does, merely a whisper of His power” (verse 14). I love this description. All of the displays that we see of God’s power in this world are simply “a whisper” of the power of God. If the separation of the water and the horizon and the calming of rushing water is just a whisper of God’s power, can you imagine what a shout of God’s power is?

As Job concluded his speech, where he described God's power on display in creation, Job said, "Who, then, can comprehend the thunder of His power?" (verse 14). It is a good question. None of us can fully understand the greatness and grandeur of God's power. What we see in creation is merely a "whisper" of the unmatched, unknowable power of God in creation.

Moving Toward Action

Go on a walk today and observe God’s power in creation. Pay attention to what you observe all around you and how what you observe points to His power. As you observe God’s creation all around you, praise Him for His creation and for being a God who is the creator and sustainer of the world.

Going Deeper

Job 26:1-14

1 Then Job spoke again:

“How you have helped the powerless!
    How you have saved the weak!
How you have enlightened my stupidity!
    What wise advice you have offered!
Where have you gotten all these wise sayings?
    Whose spirit speaks through you?

“The dead tremble—
    those who live beneath the waters.
The underworld is naked in God’s presence.
    The place of destruction is uncovered.
God stretches the northern sky over empty space
    and hangs the earth on nothing.
He wraps the rain in his thick clouds,
    and the clouds don’t burst with the weight.
He covers the face of the moon,
    shrouding it with his clouds.
10 He created the horizon when he separated the waters;
    he set the boundary between day and night.
11 The foundations of heaven tremble;
    they shudder at his rebuke.
12 By his power the sea grew calm.
    By his skill he crushed the great sea monster.
13 His Spirit made the heavens beautiful,
    and his power pierced the gliding serpent.
14 These are just the beginning of all that he does,
    merely a whisper of his power.
    Who, then, can comprehend the thunder of his power?”
