Big God, Little Me: Week 2 - Tuesday

Remember the things I have done in the past. For I alone am God! I am God, and there is none like me. Isaiah 46:9

During our Bible study together yesterday, we were reminded that when it comes to the power of God, our human minds cannot truly comprehend the extent of God’s power. Why is this? We cannot understand the greatness of His power because there is nothing on this earth to compare His power to. Indeed, He stands alone in His power.

We can read about God's unmatched power in Isaiah 9. This passage of Scripture records God's response to the false gods of Babylon that some of the Israelites had begun to worship. God explained that the false idols Bel and Nebo were powerless, explaining that they were unable to protect anyone (verse 2). Then, He said, "Listen to me, descendants of Jacob, all of you who remain in Israel. I have cared for you since you were born. Yes, I carried you before you were born. I will be your God throughout your lifetime… I made you, and I will care for you" (verses 3-4).

Unlike the false idols made by man and powerless, God explained that He created His people and held all the power to care for them. Indeed, He would take care of them their whole lives. He continued telling His people in the next verse, "To whom will you compare me? Who is my equal?" (verse 5). The unspoken answer to this question is, "No one." His power is unmatched. Because of these things, God said to them several verses later, “Remember the things I have done in the past. For I alone am God. I am God, and there is none like me. Only I can tell you the future before it even happens” (verses 9-10). In two different ways in one verse, God reminded His people that He is the only God. There is no one like Him. His power is unmatched.

My friend, there is nothing or no person on earth or in heaven who holds the power of God. We cannot compare His power to anything or anyone because nothing measures up to His power. He alone is worthy of our worship and adoration.

Moving Toward Action

After you finish reading the verses in the Going Deeper section below, pray the words of Isaiah 46:9. Pray, "You alone are God. You are God, and there is none like You." These words will not only glorify God but also encourage your heart as you reflect on God's power.

Going Deeper

Isaiah 46:9-13

Remember the things I have done in the past.
    For I alone am God!
I am God, and there is none like me.
10 Only I can tell you the future
    before it even happens.
Everything I plan will come to pass,
for I do whatever I wish.
11 I will call a swift bird of prey from the east—
a leader from a distant land to come and do my bidding.
I have said what I would do,
    and I will do it.

12 “Listen to me, you stubborn people
who are so far from doing right.
13 For I am ready to set things right,
not in the distant future, but right now!
I am ready to save Jerusalem
and show my glory to Israel.
