Big God, Little Me: Week 1 - Wednesday

You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book. Psalm 56:8

Scripture teaches that God is omniscient. That means that He knows everything. There is no fact or truth that is beyond His knowledge. This includes His knowledge of you. He knows everything about you, from your greatest joys to deepest sorrows. Even more, Scripture teaches that He cares. He cares deeply about you and your life. As it has been said, “If it matters to you, it matters to Him.”

David, who authored many Psalms, understood God’s care and concern for him and his life, and He wrote about it in Psalm 56. This Psalm was written when the Philistines, Israel's enemies, had seized David. In other words, they were written during a time of deep distress. David began this Psalm by asking God to have mercy on him as he described his desperate situation. He wrote, "I am constantly hounded by those who slander me, and many are boldly attacking me" (verse 2). David was in deep trouble and distress. In the midst of his distress, he remembered God's care for him. He wrote, "You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book" (verse 8). Let's pause and take note of this tender description of God's care and provision. David stated that God "kept track" of every single one of his heartbreaks and sorrows. Even more, He kept track of each one of his tears. David did not doubt that God cared about him, especially in his troubles.

My friend, just like God cared about David, He cares deeply about you. He knows your struggles. He keeps track of every one of your sorrows, big and small. He keeps track of all the tears you have cried. He cares deeply for you. Because of this, you can "give all your worries and cares to God, for He cares about you." Take heart, friend. God cares about you. Turn to Him with your troubles, cares, and burdens. After all, He knows and He cares.

Moving Toward Action

Spend some time praying to the God who cares deeply for you. Tell Him what is on your mind, including your worries and fears. Bring your cares before God, knowing that He cares deeply for you.

Going Deeper

Psalm 56:1-13

O God, have mercy on me,
    for people are hounding me.
    My foes attack me all day long.
I am constantly hounded by those who slander me,
    and many are boldly attacking me.
But when I am afraid,
    I will put my trust in you.
I praise God for what he has promised.
    I trust in God, so why should I be afraid?
    What can mere mortals do to me?

They are always twisting what I say;
    they spend their days plotting to harm me.
They come together to spy on me—
    watching my every step, eager to kill me.
Don’t let them get away with their wickedness;
    in your anger, O God, bring them down.

You keep track of all my sorrows.
    You have collected all my tears in your bottle.
    You have recorded each one in your book.

My enemies will retreat when I call to you for help.
    This I know: God is on my side!
10 I praise God for what he has promised;
    yes, I praise the Lord for what he has promised.
11 I trust in God, so why should I be afraid?
    What can mere mortals do to me?

12 I will fulfill my vows to you, O God,
    and will offer a sacrifice of thanks for your help.
13 For you have rescued me from death;
    you have kept my feet from slipping.
So now I can walk in your presence, O God,
    in your life-giving light.
