In our Bible study yesterday, we talked about the truth that God is everywhere. Indeed, there is no place in heaven or on earth where God is not. In our Bible study today, we will examine a second characteristic of God: God's omniscience. Omniscient means "all knowing." Just like God is everywhere, God also knows everything. That means that He knows us fully, even our innermost thoughts and deepest dreams.
David wrote about God’s omniscience in Psalm 139. As he wrote about this, he explained that God had created him purposefully and preciously. As He described God’s creation of him, he wrote, “You…knit me together in my mother’s womb” (verse 13). This, my friends, indicates God's care in creating each person. David continued explaining that God "saw [him] before [he] was born" and "every moment was laid out before a single day had passed" (verse 16). Before he was even born, David acknowledged that God knew every moment of his life. As a result, David concluded, "How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered" (verse 17). David understood that God's thoughts about Him were precious. The Oxford Dictionary defines "precious" as "of great value." David also knew that God's precious thoughts about him could not be counted. In other words, they were so great that it was impossible to count them.
What is true for David is also true for you. God's thoughts about you are precious. They are highly valued and treasured. They also cannot be counted. Let that truth sink in. The God of the universe has precious thoughts of you. Not only that, but his thoughts are also so vast that they cannot be counted. Praise God that He cares so deeply about each one of us that His thoughts toward us are precious and cannot even be counted.
You have a God who knows you fully. He knows your inmost thoughts, needs, hopes, and dreams. How remarkable that the God of the universe is intimately involved in your life. He is worthy of all of your praise. Take a moment today to worship, whether that means listening to your favorite worship song or writing out a prayer of thanksgiving. Praise Him for being a God who is intimately involved in your life.
13 You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body
and knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex!
Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.
15 You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion,
as I was woven together in the dark of the womb.
16 You saw me before I was born.
Every day of my life was recorded in your book.
Every moment was laid out
before a single day had passed.
17 How precious are your thoughts about me, O God.
They cannot be numbered!
18 I can’t even count them;
they outnumber the grains of sand!
And when I wake up,
you are still with me!
19 O God, if only you would destroy the wicked!
Get out of my life, you murderers!
20 They blaspheme you;
your enemies misuse your name.
21 O Lord, shouldn’t I hate those who hate you?
Shouldn’t I despise those who oppose you?
22 Yes, I hate them with total hatred,
for your enemies are my enemies.
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 Point out anything in me that offends you,
and lead me along the path of everlasting life.
