Where Heaven Meets Earth: Week 3 - Saturday

Come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation. Psalm 95:1

Sometimes, our worship is private, just between us and God. These moments of private worship are special and sacred, giving us the opportunity to get alone and praise God for who He is and all He has done. Private worship is not the only type of worship we can offer. You see, Scripture encourages us to also worship alongside other followers of Christ. As we worship God alongside other followers of Christ, we are strengthened, and we point others to His power and grandeur.

The author of Psalm 95 called readers to come together to worship God together. He wrote in this passage of Scripture, “Come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation” (verse 1). This call was a call for readers to come together and worship God together. Why are we called to come together? The Psalmist answered this question as he continued, “For the Lord is a great God, a great King above all gods. He holds in His hands the depths of the earth and the mightiest mountains. The sea belongs to Him, for He made it. His hands formed the dry land, too” (verses 3-4). As the creator of the whole world who holds “the depths of the earth” in His hands, He deserves all of our honor and praise. What a beautiful sight when God’s people gather together to worship Him.

The apostle Paul also called followers of Christ to gather together to worship in Colossians 3:16. In this passage of Scripture, Paul called followers of Christ to live according to their new lives In Christ. This included corporate worship. He wrote, “Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts” (verse 16). As we come together as Christ followers, we must worship God “with thankful hearts.”

Coming together along with other Christ followers is necessary for so many reasons. When we come together with other Christ followers, we declare God’s goodness and faithfulness to a watching world. We are also encouraged and empowered to keep following Christ and worship Him with our lives. May we all make corporate worship of our God a priority every week.

Going Deeper

Psalm 95:1-11

Come, let us sing to the Lord!
Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come to him with thanksgiving.
Let us sing psalms of praise to him.
For the Lord is a great God,
a great King above all gods.
He holds in his hands the depths of the earth
    and the mightiest mountains.
The sea belongs to him, for he made it.
His hands formed the dry land, too.

Come, let us worship and bow down.
Let us kneel before the Lord our maker,
    for he is our God.
We are the people he watches over,
    the flock under his care.

If only you would listen to his voice today!
The Lord says, “Don’t harden your hearts as Israel did at Meribah,
as they did at Massah in the wilderness.
For there your ancestors tested and tried my patience,
even though they saw everything I did.
10 For forty years I was angry with them, and I said,
‘They are a people whose hearts turn away from me.
They refuse to do what I tell them.’
11 So in my anger I took an oath:
‘They will never enter my place of rest.’”
