The Lord rules over the floodwaters. The Lord reigns as king forever. Psalm 29:10
There are so many reasons why God is worthy of our worship. He is the creator and sustainer of the world. He rescued us by sending Jesus, His only Son, to save us from our sins. He loves us with a perfect, unfailing kind of love. The list of reasons why God is worthy of our worship would continue without end. Among all of the reasons why God deserves our worship, there is one reason at the very top of the list: He is the King. As the King who reigns supreme over all, He is the only one worthy of worship.
David reminds us that God is the King who reigns over everything in Psalm 29. In this Psalm, he wrote, "Honor the Lord, you heavenly beings; honor the lord for His glory and strength. Honor the Lord for the glory of His name. Worship the Lord in the splendor of His holiness" (verses 1-2). From the beginning of this Psalm, David declares God's glory and strength and reminds readers to worship Him in light of His glory and splendor. Throughout the Psalm, David writes about His power and majesty. Every example of God's power and majesty is another reason to praise Him. As David's Psalm came to an end, he wrote, "The Lord rules over the floodwaters. The Lord reigns as King forever" (verse 10). God rules as King over everything. He rules over all of Heaven and all of Earth. There is nothing that is outside of His grasp or control. There is nothing more powerful than Him. Indeed, nothing compares to Him. As a result, we must praise Him.
Even the best king on earth will let us down and disappoint us. This is not the case with God. He is a perfect, holy, and eternal King who will never fail us. As the King, He not only deserves all of the worship we can offer, He demands worship. One day, Paul tells us in the book of Philippians that "every knee… in heaven and on earth and under the earth" will bow before Him and the name of Jesus" (Philippians 3:10). What a remarkable day that will be
God is the King who reigns over all. The only response to this truth is our worship, not only with our words and songs but also with our whole lives through our obedience and telling others about Him. Will you worship Him with everything in you, as He so rightly deserves?
Take a few moments today to journal. In your notebook or a journal today, write out the sentence, "God is King over all." Then, write about the implications of that statement. Specifically, answer two questions. First, how are Christ followers called to respond to God as King? Second, how are you specifically called to respond to God as King overall? After journaling, write down one specific step you can take to honor God as your King today.
Psalm 29:1-11
1 Honor the Lord, you heavenly beings; honor the Lord for his glory and strength. 2 Honor the Lord for the glory of his name. Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.
3 The voice of the Lord echoes above the sea. The God of glory thunders. The Lord thunders over the mighty sea. 4 The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is majestic. 5 The voice of the Lord splits the mighty cedars; the Lord shatters the cedars of Lebanon. 6 He makes Lebanon’s mountains skip like a calf; he makes Mount Hermon leap like a young wild ox. 7 The voice of the Lord strikes with bolts of lightning. 8 The voice of the Lord makes the barren wilderness quake; the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. 9 The voice of the Lord twists mighty oaks and strips the forests bare. In his Temple everyone shouts, “Glory!”
10 The Lord rules over the floodwaters. The Lord reigns as king forever. 11 The Lord gives his people strength. The Lord blesses them with peace.
