I Quit: Week 3 - Tuesday

And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith? Matthew 6:30

What are you worried about today? We heard in the weekend message that we live in a society that is becoming more and more anxious. Can you feel it? We are all worried about something, whether that something is our health, finances, relationships, careers, or something else. Our human nature naturally gravitates toward worry. When circumstances feel out of our control, we worry. When we are not worried, we worry that we should be worried about something. Amidst all of the worries and cares that we have, Jesus offers an invitation for us to let go of worry and look to Him instead.

As Jesus was teaching a crowd one day in Matthew 6, He entreated them not to worry, saying “I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food to eat and drink, or enough clothes to wear” (verse 25). After giving this instruction, He explained why they did not need to worry using two object lessons. First, He pointed out the birds, saying, “They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them” (verse 26). The birds do not have to work to create their own food nor do they store up food in barns for later. Instead, God provides their food to eat every day. Then, Jesus asked a poignant question: "Aren't you more powerful to Him than they are?" (verse 26). The implied answer to this question is "Of course, yes." The second object lesson Jesus gave in this teaching about worry involved flowers. Jesus pointed out how the flowers "don't work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are" (verses 28-29). Indeed, the most beautiful clothing on earth cannot compare to the beauty of the flowers. Jesus continued his teaching about the flowers, saying, “If God cares so wonderfully for the wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, He will certainly care for you” (verse 30). Do not miss the beauty of the truth in this passage of Scripture: We have a God who cares for us. Therefore, we do not have to choose to worry.

Not only does God care for us, but He is also well aware of our needs, Jesus taught. In light of God's care and concern for us, Jesus said, “So don’t worry about these things, saying, “What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear? These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs (verses 31-32). God knows our needs. Because He cares for us and knows our needs, we can trust Him to provide what we need at just the right time. Now, this does not mean He will provide everything we want, but we can be confident that He will provide everything we need.

Look at the birds and the flowers today. They are perfectly cared for by God. You are infinitely more valuable to Him. He knows what you need, so it stands to reason that He will provide. Will you let go of your worry and rest in His care and provision today?

Moving Toward Action

Memorize Matthew 6:30. Whenever you begin to worry, bring this verse to mind. Let the truth from Jesus' words in this passage of Scripture that He cares for you take root in your heart, reminding you that He cares deeply for you. You have a God who loves you and cares for you; therefore, you can trust Him in every situation.

Going Deeper

Matthew 6:28-34

28 “And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, 29 yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. 30 And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith?

31 “So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’ 32 These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. 33 Seek the Kingdom of God[a] above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.

34 “So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.
